We are weekenders with a home in Borrego but keep nothing much in the Fridge, we eat most meals out. So after seeing that the Big Horn was open we ventured in to try Borregos' newest re-invented eatery; this place changes names and management every summer.
What a disaster. You order first and then go sit down. Ooops, forgot to order something to drink while we wait; and were not asked. Back to the counter and are told to go into the bar for a glass of wine. OK, wine in hand, we sit back down. In just a few minutes food arrives! But it's not ours so after explaining it, three times, the waiter takes it away to another table. About half an hour later ours arrives. And after a few bites wish it had not. I had the Baby back ribs. They were not from a baby but a boar; huge. And TOUGH. Baked in an oven and slathered with a sad imitation of barbecue sauce, they were terrible. My wife had the Beef Special, also ribs. Again from a huge cow, maybe a bull, over cooked, tough, and bathed in sauce. Choices of vegetable included mandatory veg-all something or other and choice of sweet potato fries, regular fries, baked potato and macaroni and cheese. I ordered the sweet potato fries to accompany my Veg-all, and they were really nasty. Cold. Stiff, no flavor. My wife decided to have macaroni and cheese (since when is that a vegetable?) and was served fries and Veg-all and mac and cheese on a separate platter. Yes a platter, huge portion. And it too was nasty. I mean seriously, mac and cheese is easy! But it was clotted and luke warm and....terrible.
We gave up, left it pretty much untouched, paid our bill (no, we don't make a spectacle of it - money well spent on lesson learned), and went to Carmelittas. Unless nothing else is open and you are starving.... don't go there.
I forgot to mention that the place is dark and dank and feels closed in. Claustrophobic. The wine was good.
