We stopped at Carlee’s for lunch while exploring the Anza-Borrego desert and I am so glad that we did. Great food and a great atmosphere make a really great experience there. The steak sandwich is out of this world – a tender cut of steak (an actual steak, not sliced beef or anything like that) with lettuce and tomato on a crusty loaf of bread…wow. Very good. We also had some great garlic bread, and the rest of the menu was equally impressive; based on what we ordered, I’d love to go back and try some other stuff the next time I’m out that way.
And the atmosphere was awesome. They do have an extensive bar, in the middle of the room, but in addition to that there are lots of tables to sit at, booths all along the walls, a huge flat-screen TV in the front, and a pool table in the back. The dim lighting (which I always like) and the cool air is a plus, especially if you’re coming inside out of a hot searing day in the desert. We had a late lunch there, and at that time we were pretty much the only people in the place – though I can definitely imagine that they must get really busy on Friday nights and weekends.
It reminds me of one of those cool places that characters would stop while riding through the desert in a good ‘80s movie – the kind of place that it would be cool to visit. Thumbs up for that.
Clean bathrooms and very friendly service, too. Definitely recommended. We’ll definitely be back!
