“An absolute gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2008

This is a small hotel sitting right on the Bodega Bay. Our room was spacious with a balcony overlooking the ocean, a wet bar, and a large fireplace (real and working one, stocked with firewood). The only thing missing, as my daughter has observed, was marshmallows. The closet is stocked with iron/ironboard, an umbrella, and two bathrobes. Everything from flat screen TV, furniture, to bathroom is updated and new. Even the garden outside our window is impeccably manicured and covered with flowers. The bed is very comfortable. We will definitely be back the next time we come this way.

My wife and I stayed here in 1982 on our honeymoon. The owners took a wonderful hotel to top level in service and facilities. We came back for our anniversary and they not only honored our specific room request, but had champagne and an anniversary note waiting. When you have the fireplace, view, top notch decor, service, and cleanliness, it is difficult to leave.

Get up in the middle of the night (from a bed with two down comforters), go to the balcony and take the in stars, sea air, and the faint sound of several fog horns.

The food served was on par with the best. Breakfast was enhanced by a view of deer strolling through the field with the bay in the background.

Double the price and it would still be worth the money.

My wife and I just returned from a weekend stay for our anniversary and we had a wonderful time. Because I mentioned our anniversary, they made sure we had an upper room with a beautiful ocean view, and they brought us a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine just after settling in. Classy!

The room was very nice. It looked as though it had been recently remodeled. Ours was a double queen and was quite spacious. Mattress was comfortable, as were the pillows and down comforter. The lanai had two chairs from which to view the sunset, with nothing more than the sounds of birds as a distraction. We used the fireplace both nights, which added a nice romantic vibe. The flat panel TV was a very nice touch too (Masters golf this weekend, you know). We were impressed by the bathroom, which was stylish, up-to-date, and had all possible amenities.

We enjoyed the wine and cheese reception the first night, though neither was particularly memorable. We also dined at the Duck Club that night. The luxury of simply walking a few steps to dinner was a big plus, and the view was gorgeous.

The food was good (my wife liked her chicken more than I liked my braised ham shank), though expensive, and the service was attentive. We had nice breakfast there the next day, and felt the cost was reasonable.

The second night we dined at the Bistro des Copain in Occidental and had wonderful dinner, and wine by the glass that wasn't overpriced. Service was both friendly and attentive. The three-course tasting menu is a great deal, and the lemon creme brulee is heavenly!

The Wild Flour Oganic Bakery in Freestone, about a 10-minute drive, is worth a visit. Their sticky buns make for a delicious breakfast, which you can eat inside or out.

All-in-all, we have fond memories of the Bodega Bay Lodge & Spa, and wouldn't hesitate to return.

Bodega Bay is quaint but pretty, romantic and relaxing. I would come here again. The hotel is like a lodge on the outside but the inside of our room was comfy. There was a LCD TV mounted on the wall and pay per view movies to be ordered. The bed was comfy. We stayed in room 104 - our view of the ocean was blocked by a building of other rooms ahead of us so request a building of rooms that has a clear view of the ocean. The bathroom was nothing special but clean and acceptable. The heated pool and spa was perfect. Bring your swimsuit. You cannot actually see the sunset if you're in the pool because a building blocks it so don't jump in the pool until after the sun sets : )

The restaurant was expensive but delicious. We asked for extra logs at check in but only ended up using one in our fireplace which burned long enough for us. The fireplace is romantic. Parking is free. The French toast at the restaurant is corn flake encrusted and not as great as everyone says. The portion is huge.

Everything in Bodega Bay is 3 miles or less from the hotel so if you want to eat somewhere other than the hotel just jump in your car. Tides Inn was only a minute up the road by car. If you want to go golfing book an early tee time. The wind really picks up after 12 pm and makes it impossible to golf. There was an honor bar in the room so you can bring your own goodies to stock up on to save money.

Having just spent 3 days at this Bodega bay hotel with my wife and 2 young children i cant understand why anyone ( especially the previous person who reviewed ) would leave such a bad review, we spend lots of time travelling and usually choose boutique and food lead places to stay which was one of the reasons we choose here, the hotel is simply fantastic, the staff very welcoming, the food some of the best we had in California & the rooms which have just been re modeled large and very comfortable, and all this for what we found to be the best value rate in the half a doz hotels we stayed in.

The spa and pool are lovely, the gardens well maintained & the complimentary wine and cheese at 5 pm a great idea and a good way to meet others,

Ignore the bad reviews & stay here, the area is wonderful, we ate in the hotel on two nights, both very good, the other night we ate in an Italian restaurant in Bodega bay which although lacked nice decor had very nice freshly cooked food,

We would return to this hotel and area

Like many of the other reviews here, I agree that this place is very mediocre at best, and with a great website with fabulous photos that really mislead.
First, this place used to be a Best Western Motel, and they took the pig and dressed it up, but didn't have much of a foundation to work with.
We were upgraded to a "suite" after being told that the upper bodega bay room was taken--good enough---300 bucks, and from the photos, I was excited. Also the Duck Club--sounded and looked great.
NOT on both accounts. First, the basic "lodge and spa" is really a motel. The suite--just a motel room that's a bit larger than normal. CERTAINLY not worth 300 big ones.
We were told the Duck Club was booked and not available until 8. We asked if they might arrange an earlier time--they called back and told us of how lucky we were to get in at 6:30 from a cancellation. We were there from 6:30 until 8...MOST of the restaurant was empty the entire time we were there.
Worse, the food was pretty bad--the duck was rubber and tasteless, my wife's halibut like cardboard with literally CANNED vegitables. Awful The wines were OK however.
The views are great, but honestly, there's nothing to do in this area, unless you like little funky towns and sweeping views of the ocean.
All in all, I think this establishment could use a lot of dressingup, a lession in basic cuisine, and a knockdown of prices based on what I think is nothing more than an upscale motel.

  • Liked — the views
  • Disliked — the average rooms, the duck club poor cuisine, the outrageous prices
