Owner description: The Bodega Head Ride is a very low traffic road with large bicycle lanes in both directions. It is a 4 mile one way ride along the bay the entire time ending at the beautiful Bodega Head State Park. There are three other parks, a restaurant and UC Davis's Bodega Marine Laboratory to visit along the way. This is a perfect ride for every weather condition also. A great and affordable way to experience Bodega Bay. There is a full service Bicycle Shop with rentals at the beginning of the ride. Have Fun!

“Buy a kite!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2011

Went to Bodega Head for our second time in August; we were disappointed on our first visit that we hadn't bought a kite from one of the many quaint stores you drive past on your way to the park so we made sure we brought one with this time. Beautiful views, fog rolls in and out. Easy trails to accommodate a variety of people/abilities. Even if you can’t leave the vehicle the view from the parking lot is fantastic.

“Great Ride to Bodega Head - Also, whales!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2010

My husband and I came to Bodega Head twice on our recent camping trip to Bodega Bay - the first time we drove, and the second time we rode our bikes around the bay following the road up to Bodega Head on Bay Flat Rd. There is a large parking lot, and there were a lot of people there both times, most likely because the whale watching was simply fantastic! We hung out on the cliff above the ocean for about a half-hour each visit, and we had between 20-25 gray whale sightings each time. The whales were a good distance off shore, and there was little white water when we were there, so the whales were easy to spot when they surfaced to exhale through their blow holes. So we just looked for the water spouts and the flash of gray. I really wished we had had a pair of binoculars. We also saw a sea lion sunning herself on a rock at the bottom of the cliff, and she was fun to watch for a while too.

There is a beach you can get to down a set of stairs next to the parking lot, but it's fairly small, cold, and there weren't that many people down there. The whales were more visible from on top of the cliff actually, but we did walk down there just to take a look. There are some cool rock formations to climb around on, if you're into that. There are also some picnic tables, if you want to pack a lunch, as well as toilets if you need them, but I don't know how clean they are.

We also did some hiking on the northern leg of the Bodega Head trail, which you can enter right from the parking lot. I highly recommend it, but you will want to wear long pants and sneakers, not just because it's cold and windy at Bodega Head, but there is also a lot of overgrown brush that you will have to walk through that can be scratchy if you're not wearing pants and some portions of the trail are a little steep and rocky so sneakers or hiking boots are your best bet. The views are incredible though. The landscape is incredibly dramatic with all the jagged rock formations, the brightly gleaming ocean, and the brush and other plant life; even the air seems to gleam. Many of our pictures look overexposed it was so bright. I think we were lucky though, both with all the whale sightings and the weather; I think it's often foggy and overcast, and the whales are only there during their seasonal migration. In any case, we had a great time, and would like to come back and try the southern leg of the trail next time, which begins at the other end of the parking lot.

Go see Bodega Head and hike the trail if you're there. Just make sure to dress warmly, bring binoculars in case of whale/seal/sea lion sightings, and try to hit it when it's sunny.
