“Overpriced and noisy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2009

The staff here was VERY nice and helpful. This is probably the place to go if you are looking for the B&B experience and want to be close to the town (you can walk to the bars, restaurants, and shops). We stayed in the main house which was quite noise, you could hear everything that everyone did. On our second night, we had a leak in our bathroom (the gentleman told us they it was probably from the hot tub upstairs overflowing). Overall, it was decent, but overpriced for what it was. Would not stay here again.

The owner was quite rude to us on several occasions. It was sad, particularly considering the amount we paid.

Made a reservation at the Bistro at the Mansion owned and operated by Knickerbocker Mansion Country Inn.

The food was good, but the owners of the restaurant were far from hospitable. We were rushed to finish our dinner. Upon leaving the restaurant we were completely berated and insulted by who we learned later was one of the owners for simply asking where our coats were placed.

We were so shocked by this bizarre encounter that we called the hotel to file a complaint.

The owners were unapologetic, disrespectful and defensive.

If you are looking for a romantic and pleasant experience, take our advice and steer clear of this restaurant and hotel.

We will definitely not stay here again. We did not feel that we got our money's worth at our stay. We had to reschedule due to illness and they had no problem taking our money to reschedule us. When we arrived they didn't even have us scheduled until I reminded them of our initial reservations. Our room was not prepared for us. The jacuzzi tub was inoperable which they were aware of before we reported it to them but no effort was made to repair it. I reminded them again at our check out and asked for some relief considering they knew the condition of the tub before hand. The owner later offered us a small amount as a discount on our next stay. We will not be collecting that as we will not stay again. Oh, we were the only guests during our stay so there were no excuses for lack of service.

See Big Bear but stay somewhere else!

Stayed in the Penthouse suite for my bday weekend & must say this place was worth the money. Though the owners were out of town, the staff was truly great & catered to all our needs & service was top notch. Had my bday dinner in their restaurant downstairs & was truly a great way to celebrate. ALL the food was (can I say?) kick [--]. PLUS I did not have to worry about driving! The mansion is a great & unique place & I will be back. Thanks to all the staff there.

This very cool old log cabin needs new owners. I'm pretty sure the owners are tired of this business. Staff was very nice, but the owner is not at all concerned about service. Their dinner menu stated that the entree came with coffee or tea, then they charged for it. I ordered a glass of wine ($11.00) and they charged $12.50. When I mentioned that to the owner, he said that wine prices change all the time, and "That's Just The Way It is". Did not correct the error and did not care that his menu was wrong.
Our room was not much different than a Motel 6. The property and building's are lovely, the owners ARE NOT. Dinner was not a treat, the chef is mediocre. We had emailed our request for dinner reservations and asked to be seated by a fireplace. They sat us at the far end (the furthiest from the fireplace), when I asked to be moved, he said 'No'. The next two mornings at breakfast, they didn't even have the fireplaces burning... It was March, it was cold, there was still lots of snow. And no flannel sheets in a winter month. There are much nicer places to stay in Big Bear.

  • Liked — The log cabin itself is lovely.
  • Disliked — The un-kind rude owner

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights during one of the "biggest snow storms in 16 years". We stayed in the Lakeside room in the back house. The room is very small but I expected that after viewing the pictures on line. What I did not expect was the layer of dust on the furniture and the garbage underneath the bed. The main house is charming and the breakfasts were very good. The staff was very kind and helpful. However, the owners were not so kind and not so helpful. To warn those of you who do not have 4 wheel drive vehicles, they do not have a company that plows the snow off their driveway . On the weekend when it snowed and snowed we could not make it up the driveway and had to park in the village and walk up to hill to the B&B. On Sunday morning we awoke (at 6am) to the owner shovelling snow off of the steps outside our room and cursing on the phone about having to do it. Although the food was good and the staff was very kind I would not stay here again.
