From the street, you would never guess that the humble little building on the hill houses one of the most wonderful dining experiences in California. What a place. Evergreen presents itself as a fine dining establishment, so the menu isn't inexpensive; entrees range from $20-45. But everything we tried including appetizers was creatively, tastefully and deliciously prepared.
More delightful was the presentation. The owners Jerry (maitre d') and Emillee (server) are masters of attention to detail. From the moment we arrived, we were treated as royalty. Jerry graciously and elegantly took us to a table by the window with a breathtaking view of the lake and then proceeded to tell us about the house specials with a detail and enthusiasm I have rarely seen. As part owner, his vested interest in the quality of the menu was evident. Emillee not only took our orders and brought our food, but we learned that she is the artist who is responsible for the incredibly beautiful presentation of the food as well as the cake decorating display in the lobby. Every few minutes brought a new unexpected, beautiful surprise.
I had learned from a previous reviewer that Jerry is a Vietnam Vet with a psychology PhD who now works with veterans returning from the Middle East. When we thanked him for the work he does, he humbly brushed aside his contributions and thanked US for our own family member's service. By the time we were ready to leave, Emillee had brought me a small gift to commemorate our visit and Jerry had warmly thanked us several times for my son's military service. We left, feeling that we had been treated as dignitaries.
I have read other previous reviews of the Evergreen which complained of poor service. In fairness, I should say that we visited Evergreen during the off season and the restaurant was only about 1/3 full the night we were there. However, for us, service was absolutely impeccable. It was probably the nicest dining out experience we've had during the last decade. Exquisite. I only wish we lived closer. We would definitely be back.
