This is the big one. The iconic old lady of Los Angeles hotels, the pink palace rising from the palatial residential streets of 90210. It doesn't disappoint. For me the decor took some getting used to but once I did I marvelled at the consistency of the lovely jungle leaf wallpaper and pink furniture remeniscent of old Hollywood. Rooms are various. I prefer a bungalow reached by walking through the glorious lush grounds but on my last trip in September I spent 2 weeks in a ground floor patio room in the main building. It was excellent and had everything I needed. The outdoor patio was spacious with two sun loungers and a dining table. The bathroom was huge. I was happy. A hop, skip and a jump away the Polo lounge strutted its stuff with excellent cocktails served in booths and its famous outdoor dining area. I prefer the Bar 1912 where one can smoke outside with a view of sunsets over the famous tall palms.
Service is excellent in every department except the courtesy cars. Frankly you can discount them as the system doesn't work. During 2 weeks I was given a ride only three times - not worth mentioning really. The rest of the time I was in a Beverly Hills cab. I complained about this to the manager and he listened and explained to me that all 5 star hotels have to say they have this service but he realises that in actuality most guests are let down. Buy another car say I.
The pool is the largest I have seen in LA. Excellent for serious swimmers like myself and I often had it to myself at 9 in the morning. Poolside cabanas are uninteresting though and not worth the cost in my opinion. Cramped and inelegant. Leave them alone.
There is a very useful diner on the lower ground floor which is great for all day breakfasts and an excellent hairdressers with the friendliest of staff.
Last mention is for the concierges who all bar one treated me with the correct mix of friendliness and respect.
Basically, this place resembles a resort so if you don't want to go out of the gates you have enough space and amusements to enjoy yourself for days without stepping out.
If you are going to LA only once, CHOOSE THIS HOTEL.
