The Claremont primarily serves as a pool, tennis club, and gym to a genteel local membership, who reportedly shell out $16K in initiation fees and exorbitant $400+ monthly fees to belong. A spa rounds out that segment of the operations, which it appears is largely supported by those utilizing the property for events, as well as those unfortunate souls who are duped by the repititous use of the descriptors "renovated" and "unique" in the hotel's less-than-honest promotional materials.
In reality, the common areas of the hotel appear old, worn and smelly, and the rooms sport furnishings that don't even rival a solid 2-star hotel in middle America. Velour decorative pillows, cheap rubberized sunblocks covered by sheer curtains, ugly faux leather chairs, and generic sundries under the hotel label don't equate to 4-star in my broad repertoire of stays at such properties deservant of the designation. The towels were at least soft, but their scant size was less than utilitarian.
I booked a Classic King Non-Bay View and was presented a Shabby Queen HVAC Spectacle by the unfriendly late night reception clerk. Despite what I was told were "unnecessary" additional contacts with the hotel staff to confirm my post-6pm arrival guarantee on prior days, I was assured that the queen was the last room besides "a smaller one with two double beds" in the entire hotel. A roving manager who arrived after a long wait at first tried to convince me that I had booked the room presented, but proof that my reservation printout countered that faulty assertion met with a shrug rather than an apology. The night clerk suddenly stated that another queen without the incessant rattle of industrial aparati was available, and the manager suddenly agreed that it was the only solution available. There appeared to be no other possibility, so I bartered for a late checkout and reduction in the rate. The floorspace was only slightly larger than the queen bed and a small double sink vanity connected the dormered room to a tiny bath. Lights and a fan were set on unmarked timers, so that if you closed the door, you could easily end up in the pitch dark during your shower. Green over safe doesn't make any sense whatsoever. The air conditioning ducts in the room had grey matter hanging from them, and the carpet did not appear to have been vacuumed in some time.
I utilized the club for a yoga class and the pools during my stay, as well as the outdoor sandwich and salad shop and poolside bar. The fitness studio was well-equipped though quite small, the mats were old and smelly, and the instructor was average. The pools were extremely crowded, but the attendants were quick to bring towels and to direct me to the concessions. The salads were stale, and the burger, fries, and appetizer were cold. Drinks were underwhelming, and the smoothies were made with mixes rather than fresh fruit. The view was obscured by smog, but we were assured by the locals that on a clear day, one can see the Bay and bridges quite well.
I would only stay at this property again if the $24 resort fee for 128K dialup internet service and club amenities and the $24 valet parking fee were included in a very modest rate, and only then for the location, views, fitness classes and the pool complex. One certainly cannot trust what any of the hotel's personnel "guarantee," and our room key was deactivated when we returned to leave before 4pm. A maid who had not been informed of our late departure time was angrily hovering nearby, and she only opened the room to facilitate her immediate entry to clean. The checkout staff had also not been informed of the late departure time which the night manager had afforded us for our trouble. Management is not this property's forte. It's basically an unappealing roof over you head to enjoy the recreational amenities and views the property affords. If you get an under $100 inclusive rate, hold your nose, stay outside and enjoy the views.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, and we are very sorry to hear that your experience did not reflect the standards that we set for ourselves. Please know that all reviews are shared with the managers in each department so that we can ensure your experience is not repeated. We would like to let you know that our renovation, including the public spaces, was completed in the fall of 2009, so our hope is that you would find them refreshed and no longer worn. We also offer several packages that do include the Facilities Charge and Parking Charge. They are a wonderful value for both business and leisure travelers. While we never like to hear that one of our guests has experienced poor service, we are always grateful for the feedback so that we may address the issue with our managers and associates.
