“Not living up to their aspirations.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013

Lovely site, lovely building. Everyone seems to want to make it a 5 star hotel (with corresponding price) - but don't seem to know how to do it. Got there early before room available. Clerk looked, identified room which would soon be ready for us, told us to go to Paragon for a drink, they would let us know when room ready. Went to Paragon, told to sit anywhere. Did, watched the waitresses chat with each other for 20 minutes, then went to bar where nice barman took pity on us and gave us free drinks because of wait. No notification room was ready,we returned to check. Original clerk gone - our "identified" room had disappeared as well, but another eventually found. Dinner in Meritage. Food was first class. Wine list extensive, but no one could provide any advice on the wines. At any small restaurant in Berkeley the staff gets regular chances to taste wine so they can help the customers. Meritage just not working as advertised "fine" restaurant. No evening turn down service in the rooms - not what one would expect from the positioning of the hotel, and cost of room. Wife allergic to cow's milk, not supposed to drink soy milk because of other health issues, so had called ahead to Meritage to see if they had almond milk at breakfast- absolutely yes was the answer. Actually, no was the reality. Super concierge service. Not a bad place at all, but not what they claim it to be, and correspondingly not worth the price.

I love the Claremont! It's such a remarkable landmark for the Bay Area. The interior is elegant, and the grounds are beautiful. .My husband and I stayed there last week and were pleased with our service from the helpful staff and with our rooms. I have a difficult time understanding what negative reviewers expect from rooms that were built in the early 1900's--they are not huge, but they are clean, comfortable, updated, and plenty roomy enough. The room and bathroom were MUCH larger than the ones in the historic old hotels in other cities I have visited. Sunny who cut and styled my hair in The Salon was amazing, and Jennifer the concierge was extremely helpful with BART schedules and cab requests. We ate at the Paragon in the hotel, and the food was very good. The visit was a pleasure, and we plan to return.

We think your review is wonderful! The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa is indeed rich in history and was originally built in the early days of the gold rush as a private residence. From your unique guest room and spectacular dining experience at Paragon, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay. Our associates all truly believe in providing the very best in service in an effort to exceed our guests’ expectations in all ways! Thank you for your feedback, it would be our pleasure to welcome you again for another amazing experience.

My wife and I stayed at the Claremont recently and found the accommodations much to our liking. The staff was friendly, helpful, and pleasant. I was particularly impressed with Ernesto at the front desk. He makes a remarkable first impression with his genuine helpfulness. The room was clean and very comfortable, particularly the mattress, and the bathroom was large and accommodating. The Claremont is a great place for a relaxing getaway, and I highly recommend it!

The entrance to the lobby of this hotel is beautiful. It's an old hotel and you can tell as you enter, but it is very classy and feels very upscale. The rooms, however, are just ok. Nothing special for what you are paying for. The bathroom was old and the rooms and hallway smelled musty. The staff was nice at check-in and check-out, the salon is nice, and the pools are wonderful. The hotel is easy to get to and there are several surrounding restaurants and shops nearby.

Room Tip: Ask for a bay view room. We had a room overlooking the roof.

Really, really pleased with our stay this past week at the Claremont. We have a daughter at UC Berkeley so visit several times a year. Have stayed at the Hotel Durant, the Shattuck Plaza, and one other. Decided to give the Claremont a try this time and glad we made the move. A truly grand old hotel, completely renovated and modernized without destroying the old touches that set this hotel apart from more recent construction. We sprung for a king room with Bay view, and it indeed had a wonderful view. The room was good size (and VERY quiet -- LOVE those thick old walls and floors!), the bed comfortable, and everything was clean and tidy when we arrived. Easy, friendly check-in process. Included with the room is use of the Club, which is a HUGE exercise/tennis/pool complex that will blow anyone planning a workout's mind. Had a great lunch at the onsite Paragon restaurant. Only downside is the distance from the UC Berkeley campus and BART which rules out this hotel for us when we don't have a car. But when we've got a car, we will ALWAYS stay at the Claremont from now on!

Room Tip: Spend the extra money for a Bay View room.

I'm here right now and while I was totally impressed as we drove up, I was quite disappointed once I walked in. The room size is average but everything was dusty when we walked in. Was hoping to upgrade to a suite but no luck. The bathroom doesn't look "sparkling" clean so ill keep my flip flops on while I shower. As someone who has stayed at the Ritz & Four Seasons, I'd have to say I was expecting a lot more from what "looks" to be a beautiful and majestic hotel. We still have two days left so I'll update about service after I interact with service here. So far staff has been friendly but I've only really talked to the bell boy. Will update as soon as we check out.

I stayed at the Claremont for a conference, and I was very impressed! The front desk is *extremely* helpful and nice, and they gave my friend and me fabulous directions on how to get to BART and navigate our way around San Francisco using public transportation. The concierge gave us great advice on touring Napa Valley, as well. The bathroom was probably my favorite part of the room... very spacious and clean! I loved the glass doors! (I hate shower curtains in hotels). The exercise facility was wonderful as well, and I really loved the few classes I was able to attend at the gym.
