“Haute dorm style”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

The design of the Hotel Durant is stylish and charming; think "haute dorm living". Our only complaint is that it appears the previous resident of our room was a kleptomaniac. The following items were missing from the room: an iron, a garbage can, an alarm radio. The manager was apologetic, but this, especially the lack of alarm clock, put a damper on an otherwise pleasant stay.

Ok – If you're traveling to Berkeley and are looking for the hipest little boutique in all of Berkeley - THIS is your hotel. This place is so Cal it might as well be named Hotel Cal. From the key cards, to the names of the rooms and everything else. Let me warn you - if you like the whole Hyatt / Holiday Inn / Marriott vibe, DONT stay here. It's just not for you. But, if you're into unique hotels with charm, personality and localised authenticity - this is the place for you. Don't forget to hit up the little pub in the lobby. The BEST place to be on gameday of any kind at UCB.

Authentically Berkeley in all the right ways. Charming, Warm and buzzing with tradition.

Room Tip: Get something facing the Bay - The Views are really something special.

As long as you are aware that this hotel sits in the midst of all the student partying, you will be fine. The rooms are old-ish and small, very European-like. The decor is very fun and made us laugh. You have to be a Cal fan to enjoy!! We didn't sleep well due to all the drunken yelling going on down on the street until maybe 3 in the morning. But, you are right in the middle of all the fun if you want that. We were not there on a game night. The restaurant/bar was packed downstairs (Saturday Night) so it's a popular place, we sat down for just dessert and it was excellent. Everyone working at the hotel is very friendly and service-oriented.

This hotel has been in operation since 1928, but was remodeled recently and is now a really nice place. The staff is super nice and helpful, the location is excellent (2 blocks from UC Berkeley, 2 blocks from Telegraph) and the accommodations are comfy and fun. It's green boutiquey essence (i.e.: IPod mounts on the alarm clock, modern and retro artwork and furniture and environmentally friendly certification) is complemented by the funkiness of being an older building (windows that open, vaulted ceiling lobby, old style bathroom tile). It's much more interesting than staying in a Super 8! The restaurant off the lobby ("Henry's") is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and has a bar. The food is pretty darn good and reasonably priced. The whole place has a nice, youthful (but not rowdy) feel.

Room Tip: Get a room on the 4th or 5th (or higher) floor and you will be less disturbed by the street noise. T...

For what it was it was very nice. I didn't have a problem with street noise but I could definitely see that one might due to its location. But also due to its location, it's within easy walking distance of everything and the staff is very nice, knowledgeable and helpful. If you are looking for a luxurious hotel, this isn't it (go to the Claremont). But if you're looking for nice enough and like a bit of a boutique feel, you might like it at this hotel. The hotel felt very European to me in a good way.

Some like it hot. Not me. I got to my room on the hotel's 6th floor to find the temperature to be in the high eighties — about 15 degrees higher than outside — and the window wide open. When I returned that evening, the room was the same temperature. I called the desk and they sent an engineer who made a show of demonstrating that the radiator was not on, then went on to show me the fan. I would have asked for another room, but my survey of friends who had checked in with me revealed that everyone was in the same boat. I am old enough to remember that once an steam heat hotel fires up the boiler, they can't really control it, and even a temperate day can make the rooms sweltering. This really doesn't work for folks who are living in the 21st century.

There was a lounge down the hall with an air conditioner. The thought of borrowing it occurred to me, as did the thought of it falling six stories and through the ceiling of the restaurant. Not that the restaurant was itself worth preserving.

The room was remarkably small, but unlike small rooms in, say, Paris, it was just a small version of a big room with no concession to its size or charm. There was a flat screen television, but the cable — almost the same vintage as the hotel — was blurry and unwatchable.

This hotel also follows a new and unhappy trend of offering free, slow internet along with the opportunity to pay more for slightly less slow internet.
