“Close to Berkeley Campus, with a bit of charm and a smiling staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2011

The Hotel Durant offers a relatively affordable boutique hotel experience in a historic hotel property. The location is incredibly convenient to the Berkeley campus and a 10-15 min walk to the BART station. While the rooms are quite small by some standards (and without air conditioning!), they are tastefully decorated with funky and charming details. The staff was exceptionally friendly and the gastro-pub downstairs is very well worth a stop. Be aware that the hotel offers some unexpected perks, like an in-room coffee pot, while forsaking others (like a gym or air conditioning). Even so, I was quite satisfied with my stay.

The charm is certainly what makes the Durant so special. Thank you for your feedback and kind words about our staff.

Location is great for parents visiting their UC Berkeley students in dorms- right next to Unit 1 , up the street from Unit 3 and around the block from Unit 2. If you like the convenience and not having to get in and out of your car and being able to walk to restaurants and campus, this is the best place to stay. Rooms are adequete size and clean. Looks like rooms were redone in the last 5 years. Ones given to those with AAA discount seem to be a bit smaller but worth the savings.
Ceiling fan with on the floor fan option is nice for those who don't like the fan blowing directly on them.
Parking is tight and streets are often congested in this neighborhood so paying extra for self park or valet park option is worth it. Valet during checkin--beware that often no valet standing outside and there is only one spot for guests checking in so you are out of luck if it is filled. you can enter the valet lot around the corner off Boditch. However, there is no sign to indicate the lot so you just have to look for it. Last driveway on right on Boditch(one way street) before you get to Durant. Self park lot is apparently around the corner and requires walking down stairs to reach the hotel.
Other option is to double park and call hotel front desk and ask them to send out the valet for checkin.

Room Tip: Ask to be on the quiet side of the hotel. Ones facing Durant are noisey due to students up all nigh...

Thank you for your information on parking- we would like to give more information for your next stay and all future guests.
Parking in Berkeley can be difficult and the Hotel Durant does offer first come first serve parking. While our parking is limited at the hotel, we do also have a number of wonderful options in the area within walking distance. Self parking is $16 a night while Valet is $26-. Our Valet is often parking cars or assisting guests with luggage but please pull into the green loading zone out front and we would be happy to assist you inside.

The Durant is a piece of Berkeley/ Cal history. Have fun in the small but comfortable room, using your "student ID" key card. Service is excellent. Enjoy a drink in the bar along with a surprisingly good disc of braised Brussels sprouts (really)

Overall I enjoyed my stay at Hotel Durant. I didn't care for having to wait at the front desk for ice. It seemed inconvenient waiting for others to check in to get ice. The attached restaurant seemed expensive for the type of food served so I went down the street & ate at the college spots for less money and better food. Overall good place to stay, nice location and terrific room.

We stayed at the Durant both before and after a trip down to Santa Cruz for the weekend. The Durant is well-maintained, the staff is helpful and friendly, Lots of nice touches like 60's student id's for room keys, lab tables for room desks, fantastic photos in the halls. Only one quibble - I know everyone in Berkeley says the weather is so good you don't need air conditioning. But my wife and I disagreed on this trip - AC would have been a plus and taken our rating up to 5.

Room Tip: The front rooms facing Durant have the Campanile view

We stayed at the durant a couple of nights this summer on a visit to Cal and it was a really good choice. We wanted a few nights in Berkeley rather than SF and this was just what we had in mind. Allowed lots of walking along Telegraph and in the campus area. Hotel was fun place - parking is a huge pain but where is that not the case? We woudl go again and stay at the Durant!

Our group of three friends recently stayed at the Hotel Durant while we were in town to see Adele perform at the U.C. Berkeley Greek Theater. It was the closest hotel to the venue and it looked nice online. We arrived almost an hour before check in time and were pleasantly surprised to hear from the super nice and friendly lady behind the desk, that our room was ready and would we prefer an upper or lower level room. That type of service set the tone for the rest of our one night stay. Everyone was very nice and helpful from check in to check out.
The hotel is an older building that has been updated with modern amenities, but manages to keep it's charm. Our double bed room was spacious and well equipped.
The floors did creak in certain spots and there is no A/C, but the fans in the room made it more then comfortable. The bed was comfortable as well. I like having a coffee maker in the room, just wish they would put more coffee out for us coffee drinkers. Not a big deal though.
The location was superb for our trip. Less then a mile walk to the Greek, along tree lined streets with beautiful homes. Parking can be stressful if you chose to park on the street. We chose to do self parking for $16. They also have valet.
We even tried the restaurant Henry's located in the lobby for drinks and appetizers before the show and night cap afterwards. The service was good with pretty good food too. Pretty typical prices, not for people on a very tight budget. There is a taqueria down the street and a Hot dog place that stay open to almost midnight. And that was on a sunday night.
I will now be looking for more performances to attend at the Greek Theater, because I know there is a great place to stay near-by. The Hotel Durant!
