“All the amenities in the right location but needs to be better managed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2011

Inn is located in cluster of Victorian era houses in South Berkeley. To all outward appearances, my perfect hotel: interesting rooms with fireplaces and comfy beds, fast wifi internet, free on-site parking, hot breakfast, soap and shampoo in the bathroom, cookies and coffee in the afternoon. What more to ask for? Well, apparently, all the usable rooms seem to be on the first floor in the back buildings where it was cold and dark. When we asked for a room in the main house, we were given an attractive and light room, but it smelled distinctly of damp, and was that cat pee? The place seemed a little dusty and seedy. A hostile note ("Don't even think of touching this") was taped to the non-functional router in our room. Breakfast had all the right choices, but one had to compete for table space with the housekeepers, which felt a little strange. And their job did not include busing the tables, making fresh eggs, or even, apparently, turning on the toaster machine. What could have been a lovely intimate experience instead had a bit of an institutional feel -- one where you were an inmate. Hotel is under close price competition with the professional, but still institutional, Shattuck Hotel to the north. We canceled part of our stay at the Rose Garden to return there even though we had to pay for parking and breakfast. With a little more considered maintenance and management, the Rose Garden Inn could better protect its customer base.

The best things about the Rose Garden Inn are its homey feeling, its welcoming and helpful staff--Kevin, Allen, Cornelius, and others, its sitting room with fireplace, its comfortable bedrooms (with private bath and some with balcony), gardens (including murals), its location, its afternoon fresh cookies, its reasonable prices and the fact that breakfast is included. In the past year I have stayed there several times, on my own as well as with my spouse. And every time I have felt safe and at home. As some reviewers have suggested, the Inn is not the Ritz. But it's the Inn's age and imperfections--and again, its staff--that make it charming.

We stayed at the Rose Garden Inn while on our very first trip to Berkeley. The front desk staff were awesome, going above and beyond, our highest expectations. They gave a great recommendation for a delicious restaurant, even going so far as to print us out directions. Everyone was incredibly helpful and friendly, the grounds were beautiful, the room was large and comfortable with an outside seating area where we sat and shared a bottle of wine. Breakfast the next morning was very good, with a large selection of items including fresh pineapple, and delicious breakfast potatoes, as well as all the old stand by's. We had a great time and were very impressed by the value of this hotel, we would unwaveringly recommend this inn.

Having read wonderful reviews here, the Rose Garden Inn did not live up to my expectations. Granted, the location was good, hot breakfast was tasty, and the garden would have been pretty in summer, but my room and the general ambience was disappointing. My room smelled musty and the area around the tub and doorway was black and moldy. Housekeeping was attentive, but I would not go barefoot in the room, stand on the grayed rubber tub mat or use the dirty tub stopper to take a bath. I could hear all the plumbing working in adjoining rooms and voices next door. There was no thermostat; just an old wall heater with a dial that did not indicate degrees of heat. The room was in serious need of updating: tired and wrinkled draperies, gloppy paint job, strange plaster flowers (some broken off) glued to the wall above the fireplace. I even noticed that some guests had written their initials in black marker on the side of the fireplace mantle. I felt the lobby area looked shabby and grimy, as well. The WIFI worked, but was very slow. The big, old TV offered lots of cable channels. There was a refrigerator in the room. I would not recommend it for the lovely, idyllic spot that some thought it was.

The Rose Garden Inn in Berkeley is now our favourite place to stay in the Bay Area. Wonderfully appointed rooms, a safe walking distance to the BART station for a trouble-free ride into San Fransisco, great breakfast buffet, free parking, and an eclectic mix of stores and restaurants within fifteen minutes. It is built around an inner courtyard, with fountain and sitting areas. Great value, too. But above all else, the innkeeper and staff have only one thing in mind: to do all they can to make your stay comfortable.

Nice hotel with a pretty rose garden within a 10 minute walk of the Berkeley campus and many inexpensive restaurants.(Highly recommend Pasta Bene on Telegraph) We stayed in the main building. Our room was located on the second floor, a short walk up a flight of stairs. The room was average size with a queen sized bed and a second small single bed. Although the room was clean, it was in need of a renovation. The room faced the street which contributed to a restless nights sleep. I'd recommend a room in one of the other buildings behind the main building. The hotel provides a nice morning breakfast buffet consisting of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, breakfast potatoes, fresh whole fruits, diced melons, cereals and an assortment of breakfast pastries and breads. In the evening you'll find fresh baked cookies. Not luxury, but comfortable.

On the second floor, no air conditioning during a heat wave. one window had a screen but no way to keep the window open. the other windows, no screens. the shower didn't work either. place in decline. At least they were very nice and let us check out the next morning without charging us for additional nights.
