“incredibly convenient and memorable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2013

beautiful victorian with unique interior and varying rooms. Easy to walk downtown, to nearby flea market and to train station (where I caught a train to go to an Oakland A's game; stadium across the street from station). Funky, throwback (meant as compliment) neighborhood to walk around.

I have been to Berkeley numerous times and stayed in many of the hotels. I did not know this place existed. My son and daughter-in-law live within a block and never realized it was here. So, tucked into a square block of a central Berkley neighborhood is this quirky little gem. My assessment is based on my room which was one of the "best" and I did not see any other rooms. I had a great view to the Golden Gate and S F. From my private balcony. My room was fine, in a Victorian converted building. The bed was comfortable (however, I would prefer a larger bed if I was sharing with someone, which I was not on this trip). The WiFi was free and adequately fast. Breakfast was included and plentiful. The price was reasonable and I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Top floor view was worth having (room 309)

This hotel advertises itself as a B&B, and architecturally I suppose it is (made up out of converted older houses) but it really runs more like a hotel, which I prefer. E.g the rooms are separated, and everyone has their own bath. You can check in at any hour if your flight gets in late; etc.

The rooms are large, clean, and comfortable. Breakfast is good and includes eggs, sausage, bacon, etc; not just continental breakfast with cold cereal and croissants like some places. I do wish it were available earlier than 7:00 AM though. That may not matter to you, but I'm an early riser. Unlike most hotels, the free Internet works reliably and is reasonably fast.

It is not convenient (walking distance) to either BART or San Francisco, but if you want to be in Berkeley itself, this is a great place to stay and my first choice.

I was visiting Berkeley friends and wished to be nearby. It is a series of older homes made into a homey Inn. I would return anytime I am in the area. Excellent location with Nice clean rooms, and a pretty good breakfast.

Room Tip: Call ahead for reservation. Reasonable rates.

This place is charming! The lobby and eating areas have a fireplace and it has a cozy feel to it. If you are looking for luxury you might go elsewhere. Although it could definitely use some refurbishing the staff is great and the breakfast amazing. The price is right and this is our place of choice to stay when visiting family in Berkeley.

This is a tired building of poor quality that needs to be gutted and redeveloped. It would not pass safety regulations for electrical safety in EC countries and suspect it does not in the USA. Proximity of electrical fittings to water i.e. wash hand basins is too close to socket for safety. The bathroom is of very low build quality with the basin not fitting on the pedestal. I would certainly not allow small children in this bathroom for fear of touching electrical cables whilst wet, with the risk of electrocution. Multiple appliances into adapters shows that there is no real regard for electrical safety three of the four the switches on the table lamps don't work, the fridge is old and noisy.
There are no tiles around the basin with resultant dirt traps. The grab handle on the bath fell off and is certainly not safe to hold. I would urge you to look else where. There are numerous homeless people hanging around and the security gates to the car park have broken wheels and thus don't close. Don't spoil your visit to Berkeley by staying here.

Room Tip: Look elsewhere

We have now had the pleasure of three different stays at the Rose Garden Inn, an eclectic collection of several older homes in Berkeley, just south of the 1960's craziness of Telegraph Avenue. Each time, our visits have involved different rooms in different locations throughout the facility, and each time the spot hit the mark. As is true with any hotel stay, the experience begins with the staff, and the front desk is staffed by friendly and helpful people who seem committed to making the stay a memorable one. The rooms are each unique, and well appointed with furnishings which seem to fit the tenor of the original times for the buildings, with a modest mix of modern (flat screen TV, microwave, blowdryer) conveniences dotting the layout. The rooms have gas log fireplaces, and feature crown moulding and other traditional features. Perfection-demanding travelers will find flaws, no doubt, but these are, at least in our view, negligible.

Your stay includes breakfast that is prepared by the housekeeping staff, and it is served in a wood-floored great room, which on our weekend visits has included soothing harp music. It is common to have the breakfast room populated by speakers of various languages, underscoring the fact that Berkeley is an international scholars' destination. It is within walking distance to the UC campus, and offers a wonderful contrast to the other gentrified campus hotel spot (the Durant), plus the rooms here are bigger and more accommodating. It offers a great place to stay for the Cal fan/road warrior, Bear Parent, or other visitors just wishing to get a flavor of Berkeley for a day or two.

If there were negatives to share, it would be that at its margins, there are some things that could use some attention. Chief among these would be the gouged leading edges of the front steps, as well as the heavy and loud front door, which is located mere steps away from Room 605. In fairness, our first stay at the property was in 605, and I do not recall hearing the front door slam while inside that hotel room, yet it makes quite a sound in the front parlor area.
