“The breakfast, the gardens, and the staff are what makes it really special”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2012

Wonderful, smart, energetic staff. Big American style breakfast, the works. This reminded me of some tourist hotels in seaside towns in Holland. Charming garden. If you love flowers, and especially you aren't from California, you'll be very pleased with the roses and the hydrangeas, amazing. I stayed in 2 different rooms, 407, which was small but pleasant, and in 501, a multiple bed/family suite. Rose Garden Inn has a European pension feel, lived in, loved in, and there's a lot of life left in it.

Room Tip: In 501, with 3 king size beds, and a sofa bed, I warn you - the sofa bed is pretty bad. My friend...

The pictures on line make the inn look totally charming, but in real life it is tired and run down. The carpet in our room was not well vacuumed with lots of dust around the edges, and the bathroom was pretty disgusting with lots of mold around the tub and on the shower curtain and poor quality grouting in the floor and around the tub. Old caked dust/dirt on the panelling of the room and bathroom doors. Beds only fair. No way to have fresh air in room at night as only access to outdoors was a sliding door to an outside patio that did not have a screen on it, so did not feel secure leaving the door open at night. Breakfast adequate in volume but eggs very dried out, bacon rubbery, and pastries not fresh. Price high for quality of inn.

I stayed at the Rose Garden Inn while visiting my daughter in May of this year. What a nice surprise! I loved everything about the inn:

The rose garden is absolutely gorgeous and a quiet place to have lunch, or sip a cup of coffee while relaxing. Our room even had its own little patio with table, just out of the sliding doors on the first floor. Very pleasant especially when the weather is gorgeous as it was in May.

The location is perfect for visiting students at Cal, just a 10/12 minute walk to campus on Telegraph. Granted, Telegraph can turn a little scary at night with lots of homeless people, but this location is ok. And if you walk to College avenue (about 12 minutes), you are right in the area of many restaurants and shops.

The breakfast buffet is all you need to start your day (included in the price). You can even take your tray outside and enjoy it in the rose garden. Can't think of a better way to start a day!

My review would not be complete without adding a note on the kindness and professionalism of all the innkeepers. All this made for a very pleasant stay!
I already booked a room for my next trip. Would highly recommend the Rose Garden Inn!

We've stayed in the Hotel Shattuck and the Claremont Hotel, both of which were so much nicer and less expensive than this B&B. We stayed here once and never again because it was the only one in the area that was available. They jacked up their prices for that weekend - a game weekend of course and it was one of the worst places I've ever stayed. There were ants crawling on the towels and it was just plain dirty. Unlike other reviewers, I was not impressed with the room or the breakfast. It was like staying in a dungeon, with old furniture and dirt everywhere. Oddly, the bathroom was almost as large as the room but they didn't bother to clean the bathroom. Guess it was too large and they didn't have time. We will never stay there again. Disgusting.

Room Tip: don't stay here

When we decided to visit our daughter in the area, she went to work, looking for a placce for us to stay. She knows what we like and she found all of our requirements in the Rose Garden Inn. Free Parking!!! Such a nice surprise after paying $22 per night in Santa Cruz! They could use a few more spots as it does fill up in later evening but we found a spot on the street close by. The rooms were small but had everything we wanted. The fridge was big so accommodated our refreshments and snacks. Great Internet connection in the room - love that. The place was clean and the cleaning staff quite prompt in attending to our room when we left for the day. Even tho it is basically an old house, we heard almost no noise. The courtyard is beautiful, the smell of roses so strong, like sitting in a actually ROSE GARDEN! The breakfast buffet is massive - you could not eat in a restaurant and get anything better. And a cup of coffee or tea and a cookie at 3pm - such a nice touch!! We had the double bridge view room with wrap around porch - absolutely the best room in the complex! Great views and a nice breeze all day! Cannot say enough about the great time at Rose Garden. Hope we can stay again soon!

Room Tip: I think rooms on upper floors would always be nicer!

I really liked the common areas of this hotel more than I liked the rooms. The garden area was lovely and inviting, even in January. The freshly baked cookies and coffee/tea that are available in the afternoon and evening in the check-in area are a nice touch. The living room with the comfy couches and gas fireplace are very inviting. The rooms seemed a bit tired and somewhat musty, although ours was very roomy. One bed was very soft and there was a step up from one room to the next that was a real trip hazard. When we came in at midnight we could hear, in one of our rooms and in the bathroom, the folks in the next room talking very loudly. The parking was certainly adequate on the weekends since the overflow could park on the street, but it would be problematic during the week. Overall, a pleasant experience.
