“Great Hotel and Location in Berkeley”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2012

This was my third stay at the Hotel Shattuck and is my favorite place to stay in Berkeley. Great location and BART is just down the street. The lobby bar is very nice with a good selection of ice cold beer on tap. Stayed here for a meeting and the food was really good. Rooms are very comfortable and clean. Service was excellent. Enjoy.

Room Tip: Request a room away from streets.

We just finished a four day stay at the Shattuck. The hotel is central to everything in Berkeley and a nice alternative to staying in SF for a long weekend. This is the kind of hotel that is perfect for those who have been to the city before and do not need a lot of pampering and assistance. The staff is very low key and the door is not always opened when you enter/exit. It feels more like an apartment building in which you have rented a room for your stay. No one fusses over you here but sometimes that's OK. Everyone is pleasant but not always thinking about how to help you.
The garage is across the street convenient and not terribly expensive. We stayed on the top floor and had a small glimpse of the Golden Gate from our window. It was quiet and very clean. The bed was comfortable. The vanity in the bathroom is non-existent and the bathroom door and closet door open into each other causing a major pain to close one and open the other especially since you have to store your toiletries in the closet because of the vanity situation. The closet is super big and it is possible to open your suitcase and leave it on the luggage rack in there- out of the way. The restaurant is good.
Berkeley is in a time warp; a good deal of it feels like it is stuck in 1969. There are homeless people everywhere and the smell of urine is ubiquitous. Yet the homes are beautiful and upscale. As a NYer I am not shocked by homelessness but it seems to big a really big problem here. If this would make you uncomfortable, I would not recommend staying in Berkeley.

I absolutely love this quaint, charming, boutique hotel. The rooms are spacious and modern, amenities are great, and the staff is wonderful. We hosted our company event there and the staff went above and beyond to accommodate our requests, additions and changes. Every single person, from the front desk to the catering empoyees, as well as the Event Manager, were very friendly and accommodating. We will definitely utilize this venue for future events!

My spouse, youngest son and I stayed here 2 nights over the homecoming and parents weekend at Cal. We have a freshman studying at UCB.

We flew into Oakland and took the BART to downtown Berkeley. From there it was just a block's walk to the hotel. The west entrance to UC Berkeley is 2 to 3 blocks east from the hotel.

Although we barely saw the place, because we were only there when it was time to get some shut eye, the hotel was very nice. Our room was clean, comfortable and quiet given the amount of traffic down below on Shattuck. The staff was courteous, professional and friendly.

A couple markdowns...The sink in the bathroom lacks any sufficient counter space to place your hygiene items. People talking in the hallways are not at all muffled when inside the room. Also the hotels in the area, including this one, appear to substantially increase their rates on home football weekends.

Seems like a remodeled ramada/motel. The decor is fun, but there is no valet, you have to park across the street and drag your bags in. Great location, very central, right across from the metro stop... But I was greeted in my hotel room by a loud drunk homeless man shouting profanities beneath my window... Not much you can do about that I suppose... Better noise insulation in the rooms could help though. I'm picky, but a few other things: the shower head has pretty good water pressure, but is not adjustable, no amenities like shower caps or cotton swabs, also no mini fridge, complimentary water or microwave... Really the fact that the room is clean, comfortable and that the hotel is in a great location save the three star rating.

Room Tip: This hotel is right by a BART station

Definitely one of my favorite lobbies. The artwork and tiled floor are great. The hotel bar is very good, and it is well placed to explore a lot of Berkley's fine food establishments. Also close enough to walk around Berkley while leaving the car in the parkade across the street (downside of the place is the lack of parking).

My husband and I wanted to get away for a night without the kids, and thankfully my mom was happy to oblige. Although we wanted to go somewhere in wine country, all of the hotels were at least a two night minimum due to it being crush season. Then I thought up the great idea of going to a Cal game (I'm an alum) and heading to Chez Panisse for a special dinner out. Again, it was hard to find a hotel without a two night minimum, so when I saw the great reviews on TripAdvisor and the fact that we could stay one night, I thought I'd give it a shot. We loved the hotel. It's a small, beautifully restored hotel with a lot of charm. The decor is gorgeous, especially downstairs.

We stayed in a room with a king sized bed, and I'll be honest, the room was very small. However, it was not facing Shattuck, so it was quiet. And having a 3 year old and a 6 month old, we wanted our night away to be quiet. I loved the environmentally friendly touches - from the less-waste soap to the key card that activates the thermostat. The bed was very comfortable as well.

Most of all, the location was perfect. We parked our car at the Richmond BART station because it was a game day and we were afraid the parking would be full near the hotel. The hotel is steps away from the BART, so you could be in SF in 15 minutes. We walked all over Berkeley, including to Chez Panisse, which was straight up Shattuck .7 mile away.

The staff were very friendly, although the check-in was a little slow, probably because the staff were busy answering questions. However, once we did check-in, they were great and very accommodating with our requests.

Finally, the bar downstairs was a great place to get a drink before heading out. They have a late Happy Hour, and we enjoyed munching on marinated olives and sipping some fun cocktails.

All in all, it was a great place to stay, and I will definitely come back the next time we head to Berkeley.
