“When a peace sign greets you...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2012

it's gotta be good! Having lived in San Francisco for 6 years and travelled about the area, I'm used to staying in the city - I know the ins and outs, the great vistas. But, now that my son is living in the East Bay area I needed to be closer to him when I went to visit, but the question was where to stay. I love Berkeley - it's got that college town in an urban center environment. There are academics and students in abundance and off course the vagabonds that proliferate in the Northern California area. It's still the eclectic vibe of San Francisco, but on a smaller scale. The hotel is situated 2 blocks from campus and near Starbucks and various local coffee houses and restaurants; however, the hotel has a beautiful bar and restaurant for convenience. It is directly across from BART and a parking garage is nearby. For a woman traveling alone, I was afraid of parking at night, but always found a spot right out front of the hotel. The other nice security feature was the need for a room key to access the elevators - that was an especially nice touch. The hotel is beautifully decorated in that hip style that is so popular with other boutique hotels - black and white with red, blue and coral accents. The inlaid peace sign mosaic at the front door just makes it feel like you belong here. The rooms are commodious and decorated in chocolate brown and aqua blue. The marble shower and sink area can accommodate two people, but the sliding glass door may not be enough privacy if you're staying with a friend or colleague. The rooms were clean, there were a couple of stains on the duvet, but looked as if they just didn't come out in the wash - lipstick perhaps. In addition, the hotel is a green hotel which turns on lights with room key and has sensors for shut off, they use green bathroom products as well - a nice touch. Overall, the room was clean, the staff were pleasant, the elevator had a concierge stationed at night and it had access to everything I needed. If the boy stays in the east bay, I know where I'll be booking my rooms - right at the Hotel Shattuck! Ask for a room near the top and front of the hotel for the best views.

Room Tip: Like everywhere in the Bay area, there are panhandlers. Please ignore them, they are mostly harmles...

Loving the proximity to BART and the quaint shops and restaurants. Beautiful and clean room, albeit a tad small in size. Nice comfy bed too.
DO NOT eat at the hotel lobby restaurant. Terrible, terrible, terrible. It put a stank on the rest of our stay and left a bad taste in our mouths. Literally.

Dear Kelly M,

Thank you for taking the time to share about your experience while a guest in our hotel. I am delighted that you found our hotel convenient, well appointed and clean. I am sorry that your experience in our restaurant was disappointing and welcome the opportunity to speak with you further to know more so we can make sure this does not occur again. I may sound like a broken record, but guest feedback helps us know what we are doing well and where we have room for improvement.

Kelly M, I hope we can communicate soon so I learn what we did not get right for you during your visit. Further, I look forward to welcoming you back if your travels have your returning to the Bay Area.

Best regards,

Greg

Excellent hotel, and a great value for the rate! The property is a historical building that has been beautifully renovated. The staff was all very friendly and helpful; the rooms were small but beautifully decorated and immaculate. There was free wifi throughout the property, and the location couldn't have been better. We didn't get a chance to try the restaurant this time, but will plan to on a return trip. That's right, we'll be back! My only complaint was that one day we didn't receive housekeeping service, and came back to wet towels on the floor. When I called down at 10PM, however, the bellman apologized, came up with clean towels and removed the dirty ones. It should also be noted that they have put a coating on the bathroom doors, so you can disregard the previous reviews stating that you can see right through the bathroom doors.

The location of this hotel is terrific as it is a couple of blocks from the BART station and walking distance to UC-Berkeley and many great restaurants. I requested a quiet room and got one--not with a great view but excellent sleep quality. The room was fine, although the bathroom was a bit odd, as it was spacious, but there was not enough surfaces to place your cosmetics on. There is a gym at the hotel that is nothing fancy but certainly enough for my purposes with a few stair-masters, weights etc. The weakest link to me were some (by no means all!) staff at the reception and the bar: it seemed at times to take for ever to get anything done or to order a drink at the bar. I didn't eat at the restaurant, but heard other guests complain that they thought it was pricey. Overall, there were more pluses than minuses in my stay, so could see myself staying here again.

I am currently staying at the Shattuck which has delighted me at every turn. The rooms are beautifully redone with top-notch fixtures in both the bedrooms and the baths. Some rooms can run small - when I asked for a larger room and if I could check out additional rooms, the staff was totally accomondating. Daily the staff has been both speedy and responsive to any request. The bar is beautiful, light and airy - Kevin makes his bar sparkle with his wit and efficiency. The restaurant makes some of best pork sliders I have ever had. The Bailey's Chocolate Cheescake with sea salt caramel dessert is mouthwatering and something to return for. There is a homeless issue in the neighborhood which does slightly burst the special ambiance which the hotel guests feel from the moment they enter the hotel. This hotel is a gem.

Despite the promise of city or hill views, we got a room with a view over the roof and the extractor fans, which were niether of interest nor particulary quiet! Room fittings very scruffy. Key cards failed very frequently, which meant frequent trips back to the reception desk. Two days to get coffee maker in the room, despite a 15 minute promise from the front desk. Staff at the front desk cold and not very helpful, like we were doing them a favour! Overated and costly. No, we will not be staying there again.

Room Tip: Look for another hotel!
