it's gotta be good! Having lived in San Francisco for 6 years and travelled about the area, I'm used to staying in the city - I know the ins and outs, the great vistas. But, now that my son is living in the East Bay area I needed to be closer to him when I went to visit, but the question was where to stay. I love Berkeley - it's got that college town in an urban center environment. There are academics and students in abundance and off course the vagabonds that proliferate in the Northern California area. It's still the eclectic vibe of San Francisco, but on a smaller scale. The hotel is situated 2 blocks from campus and near Starbucks and various local coffee houses and restaurants; however, the hotel has a beautiful bar and restaurant for convenience. It is directly across from BART and a parking garage is nearby. For a woman traveling alone, I was afraid of parking at night, but always found a spot right out front of the hotel. The other nice security feature was the need for a room key to access the elevators - that was an especially nice touch. The hotel is beautifully decorated in that hip style that is so popular with other boutique hotels - black and white with red, blue and coral accents. The inlaid peace sign mosaic at the front door just makes it feel like you belong here. The rooms are commodious and decorated in chocolate brown and aqua blue. The marble shower and sink area can accommodate two people, but the sliding glass door may not be enough privacy if you're staying with a friend or colleague. The rooms were clean, there were a couple of stains on the duvet, but looked as if they just didn't come out in the wash - lipstick perhaps. In addition, the hotel is a green hotel which turns on lights with room key and has sensors for shut off, they use green bathroom products as well - a nice touch. Overall, the room was clean, the staff were pleasant, the elevator had a concierge stationed at night and it had access to everything I needed. If the boy stays in the east bay, I know where I'll be booking my rooms - right at the Hotel Shattuck! Ask for a room near the top and front of the hotel for the best views.
