“Visiting Daughter”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

My daughter's apt is way too small to accomodate a relative/friend. I have stayed at another hotel in Oakland and definitely enjoyed the service and wonderful breakfast with many choices. The bedroom consisted of two double beds of which I only used one! The hotel furnished a microwave and small refrigerator which was very helpful.

The staff throughout the hotel were lovely people. I plan to stay at La Quinta Inn Berkeley for my next visit.

“DOG ECONOMICAL AND GOOD FOR THE PRICE”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

Christmas with an 80 pound Golden. Hard to find hotel rooms accepting a large dog or at a reasonalble price. No charge for Riley. I was skeptical because of some poor reviews on tripadvisor. Bedbugs! Smelly. Prostitutes. Run down.

The building is old but the management does a good job keeping the rooms and public spaces clean. If you look closely, there are areas that need refurbishing but my room (210) was large, clean and smelled fresh. Double pane glass kept the road noise on University Avenue at bay.

All employees very friendly and competent. I would stay here again. This is the only hotel I know that does not charge for pets. Free parking a plus. Fresh paint and no damaged room furnishings. New carpeting and repairing some mold under the bathroom door would help.

Oh yes, no prostitutes or bad smells that I could determine!

“Prostitution”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2012

i was sent to this hotel for 2 weeks stay, in my first day when i walked in i felt this horrible smell of skunk in the lobby. i checked in and got to this 1960 years old elevator with molding in. My first night i notice a lot of action on hallway and i started wondering and went out to check myself and there were hookers in and out. Every time when i was getting out of my room there were this bad smell of skunk, i mean really bad. My second day i notice that was a pet friendly hotel and there were this couple in one of those rooms with two dogs and sometimes i could listen to her loud voice cussing and fighting and sometimes she let the dogs out in the hallway and closed her door. Third day the same lady was yelling at the dogs in the hallway early 5 am. I crossed with this beautiful lady waiting in front of the door across my room and i heard the saying how much she was going to charge him, when i stepped she got in and 40 min later she came out and i noticed there was hooker. I never seen all kind of weird people staying in the laquintas like this one. Also i saw cops coming in few times and check some the rooms. I guess this hotel is loosing business to a Motel 6.
Furniture and tv are 20 years old , shower was falling a part, etc... I was very disappointed with this hotel and it is probably 100 year old. If you want to stay with your family just find a better place or sleep in the car. Just giving 2 star because it is good location and by the marina. I feel very bad for the staff, but i know they need work to pay their bills. If for some reason you decide to stay, first just walk in the lobby and you'll feel this skunk smell and than you make a decision whether to stay or not.

“Average Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

The hotel is located on a busy street near the freeway, Amtrak, Berkeley Marina, restaurants and shops. This is an older hotel and it could use some updating. It is a comfortable stay for the value. Good breakfast, friendly front desk staff and house keeping does a good job cleaning. The only negative is the wi-fi is very weak and sometimes not available at all.

Room Tip: Hotel is near Amtrak - Union Pacific railroad and if you are a light sleeper, it can get noisy.
