“Barely adequate for one night stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

Disappointing one night stay at Quality Inn at University. And I'm disappointed in my fellow Trip Advisor reviewers for rating this hotel so highly; the modal--most frequent--rating was Very good, with the second most frequent rating being Excellent.

I nearly rated it Poor, for these reasons: The room (1) was tiny (there truly was not enough room for two people), (2) contained only one chair, (3) had a broken lamp shade, (4) contained one small bar of soap that we used for both sink and shower, (5) had badly scuffed molding, (6) the coffee maker did NOT work, (7) the bathroom light was too dim, (8) and the little pad of paper had only ONE sheet of paper (that I used to write notes for this review).

I would rate the breakfast buffet as average, if you're a mainstream eater with relatively low standards. And the buffet certainly did not look inviting.

The check-in was friendly. Very nice touches were the two small bottles of free water and the automatic light in the bathroom. The bed was good, and we slept well. And we would rate the shower as Excellent.

Overall, then, I'll go with the rating of Average.

Room Tip: No elevator so reserve a room on the ground floor if climbing stairs is an issue for you.

“worst hotel we ever stayed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

I rarely write any review but this time I will have to say something. We stayed two nights on 7/31 & 8/1. The reasons I gave it worst rating are as follows:
1, The room is awfully and uncomfortablly small;
2. The bedspread smelled bad;
3. The mattress was tilted inward so it's not comfortable;
4. Smoke detect beeped a few times at night;
5. Toilet was plugged once and my husband had to get a plunge to fix it;
6. The charge extra $5 for each sheet or blanket. Our family travels quite offten and this is the 1st time a hotel charges money for extra sheet/blanket;
7. Usually hotels supply two soaps one for bath and one for sink use. But this hotel only supplied one. You had to ask for 2nd soap (Thank God there was no extra charge for this!);
8. Free breakfast was included. But you need to be aware of two things: First, carefully check the plastic spoon before using it. They probably buy the cheapest spoon they can get - the edges of the spoon was very rough that it scrached my upper lips to bleeding; Second, you need to remind them when food item is out since they are not comming if you don't ask;
Only thing good about this hotel is that it's close to UC Berkely but there are many many other hotel options.

“Newly renovated and very nice indeed!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2011

This is now a Quality Inn, part of the Choice Hotels chain. It is an older motel, but the rooms have been updated with very comfortable bedding, a good shower/tub, nice furnishings. Its location is great for UCB visitors, or as a low price bedroom for visitors to San Francisco -- only about 4 blocks from the high-speed rail (BART), which takes you right downtown in about 15 minutes. Also free breakfast, but don't expect it to be like IHOP! Parking is tight, but we had no problem even when it was full the days we visited. Best of all, the rates are very low for California, about $70. Terrific!

“Now a Quality Inn property”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2011

Finding acceptable accommodations in Berkeley is not simple. The Quality Inn is a good budget option. Located about a mile from campus and the Gourmet Ghetto, the motel is downtown and a short walk to several restaurants.

The rooms were updated, comfortable and clean but small enough that we needed to take turns passing around the foot of the bed. They provided the usual Quality Inn amenities like a fridge, microwave and ironing board. Air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi and free parking were available, though the parking lot filled early.
