“Happy Hour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2014

Dropped by for early dinner (this restaurant has happy hour from 4-6pm), after a movie. Pleasantly surprised as first time guests, were presented with many options. The happy hour drinks $5 and limited menu offerings fit the bill - green papaya salad, tuna carpaccio (so good, had to order another), claypot rice, and ordered an entree size of shaking beef salad. Requested a few more shrimp chips and was brought a bowl of broken pieces - still taste good so was glad. Will return again.

“Excellent Vietnamese Food With French Influence”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2014

I have eaten at Vanessa's several times and the food is always excellent. I have enjoyed every dish I have ever eaten there, which is most of them. V, the owner, always remembers our names and asks about us. The bar and the small tables in front of the bar seats are also good places to eat for one or two people. The only negative is that the tables are too close together in this small size restaurant. I strongly recommend Vanessa's.

“Berkeley Find - Vietnamese with a Twist”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2014

The restaurant is small and not overly atmospheric. The food wonderfully takes up all the space on the table with its Vietnamese small plates style. We samples four dishes and almost all were wonderful including the special crab salad of the night. We even took home their famous pecan pie because we were full, but had to try it. That too was a winner.

“Incredible variety of small plates”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

This restaurant is a total hidden gem... While in California I visited both locations. I was blown away by the presentation, taste, and variety of the food. My cousin and I ordered a large variety of items from the menu and I would have every single one of them again! A few of my favorites:

-Thinly Sliced Filet Mignon Carpaccio, Fried Shallots, Asian Herbs, Roasted Peanuts (AMAZING)
-Crispy Garlic Salt & Pepper Tofu with Sautéed Scallions, Bell Peppers
-Slow Oven Roasted Pork w/ Spicy Chipotle Sauce, Tortilla Chips & Pickles

You definitely need to try the soup! Their soup is so full of flavor and it's so delicious! I wish I could replicate it..

Also, be sure to try the Lychee Martini -- you will not regret it!
