“Awesome views, but drive up it with a friend so one can steer and one can look”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2012

The easiest way to find this winding road up into the hills above the UC campus is to drive along Gayley/Piedmont on the east side of campus, turn toward Lawrence Hall of Science when you see the sign pointing toward it and some other destinations (at a stop sign at the intersection with Stadium Rim Way - that street may itself be unmarked), and then turn left at another stop sign to avoid just continuing around the stadium. This winding road goes past the UC Botanical Garden and then, near its top, the Lawrence Hall of Science, and the views of the Bay are spectacular -- so much so that you really should take a friend so that one of you can look and one drive on the way up, switching places on the way back down. There is no free parking at the top, but you can sneak into the big parking area above the Lawrence Hall and pause long enough to take some pictures above the Hall's roof, or you can pay for parking there or in the lot next to the Hall and have a more extended visit of the scenery and perhaps the Hall itself.

If you wish to continue your tour of views of the Bay, turn right when you get to the stop sign on Grizzly Peak Blvd. at the top, and you will find some free parking along that road (particularly right after you turn, though you may not have any luck finding a spot on a sunny, scenic day). While you are high above Berkeley, you may want to visit nearby Tilden Park, which is an experience in itself.
