“OK German food in Berkeley”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

My co-worker is obsessed with German food. He found this spot and has since dragged the group of us there several times. He loves it. I don't get it (granted, I'm picky about my German food).

Nice space, in an area that really needs it. Nice owner. Nice waitresses. Good desserts.

The food... just didn't resonate with me. I've ordered the schnitzel (not something I'd re-order), tried to order the salad special (but they were out of a key ingredient), and the goulash (OK, but not that flavorful).

It's ok, but I think Speisekammer in Alameda is a much better representation of German cuisine.

“Great German Food and Beers!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2012

A great restaurant in an area that needs it. We have eaten there at all three meals and they are amazing. Great and friendly service, hearty food that reminds me of many visits to Germany. Very welcoming and cozy. A great value!!

“Will return again.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2012

Eight of us went for brunch on a Sunday morning. One of the dinners was born and raised in Germany so knew good German food. The place was spacious but not elegant. No real view but lots of restrooms (no waiting in line). The menu was fairly large in both English and German. There was a nice selection of German beers. Guests selected a variety of menu choices from soup, sausages with potato salad, pork chops with eggs, salads, etc. Everyone seems pleased with their choices. Service was fast and efficient. We will return to try other choices in the future.

“Good spot for brunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2011

This place had made a splash with its authentic German breakfasts and baked goods--its pastry-laden counters definitely give it the look of a Konditorei. Missed it on the first try--they suddenly changed hours, dropping weekday breakfast until the weekends and opening later for lunch and dinner. The next visit for brunch worked out; the bratwurst with eggs and potatoes were a nice touch. I liked their coffee; in fact I asked what brand they used and it's another local company's (Ecco). Big plus is a very spacious room where you can stretch out at the table and not elbow your neighbor when you shift as at some other popular breakfast haunts in Berkeley.
