“Beautiful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

We had the pleasure of staying a the Garden Bed and Breakfast. The cottage is located within walking distance to coffee shops, restaurants, parks and groceries which was perfect for us since we were in Berkeley to visit family, but also wanted to be able to enjoy the things that make Berkeley a great place to hang out in. Mort and Yuko, our hosts are really nice friendly people. Felt very welcomed as soon as we arrived. We were greeted with complimentary home baked bread and little notes explaining how to use various things. There is also a nice collection of magazines and books about Berkeley and the Bay Area. The cottage is located behind the main house in a beautiful garden with many of Mort's artworks part of the surroundings. A small patio adjoins the cottage, and on sunny days is a wonderful place just to sit, chat and enjoy being there. The cottage is very clean and artfully decorated with original paintings and textiles and on cold nights is well insulated. (We come from Chicago and are often amazed at how drafty most Bay Area homes are in the Winter,so were pleasantly surprised that this cottage is well constructed and retains heat well.) The hosts provide a small refrigerator, toaster, silverware and dishes so snacks and very light meals can be conveniently prepared (especially since Trader Joe's is just a short distance away.) My mother-in-law visited and LOVED the place. She lives close by in Berkeley, and was so impressed that she plans to take a "stay-cation" at the cottage. She is very picky, so this is high praise! Size is perfect for couples who want to stay in a central Berkeley location among beautiful surroundings.

Room Tip: This is a one room cottage with a cute raised bathroom.

I was in Berkeley for a training course for 7 nights and stayed in the apt. of the main house. It was everything one could ask for. Microwave, coffee pot, filtered water, electric tea pot, and great goodies from Yuko made this a welcome retreat. Located in a very quiet neighborhood and only a few blocks in either direction from most anything you could want. I did not have a car and the location was perfect. Would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it.

I stayed at the cottage three nights and this was by far the greatest accommodation I had during my stay in the San Francisco area. The place is very peaceful, located in a residential area of Berkeley, while very practical since it is a few blocks from two bart stations. The cottage is great, located in the back of the garden, well furnished and with a tasteful decoration. Yuko takes great care of the place - she's japanese and obviously is very concerned with keeping the cottage clean and tidy at all time. And so discreet at the same time! I definitely recommend the place, and should I have to come back to Berkeley, I would directly go for the garden cottage. A last information: internet connection is high-speed and reliable, which when you come for business may be important. Special bonus for French people: Mort and Yuko are fond of France, and you could have with them passionate discussion about French culture and food provided you are willing to do so....

A simple and lovely garden cottage in a serene setting. I stayed here while visiting family who live a few blocks away. I thoroughly enjoyed the peace and beauty of the cottage and garden. Mort and Yuko were perfect hosts, helpful and friendly but never intrusive. I recommend it highly and look forward to my next visit.

Tucked away from the busy streets of Berkeley, surrounded with a garden blooming in variety and profusion is the guest house of the Garden Cottage Bed & Breakfast. Its ambiance is one of Japanese simplicity built from natural materials. It is a place of calm and serenity, a perfect counterpart to the stimulation and excitement of the Bay area. We are frequent guests and always enjoy our return and the hospitality of Mort and Yuko.

Room Tip: You cannot lose. They are all good.

A delightful surprise to find oneself in a spacious, spotlessly clean and wonderfully comfortable second floor retreat centrally located in Berekely. The outside balcony is the perfect spot to read, relax and take in the incredible fragrances of the garden which is in bloom everywhere one looks. The owner is a sculptor and the result is a zen paradise to stroll in while reflecting on the next event of the trip. I did not stay in the cottage but was enchanted by the view of it from the kitchen window of my suite of rooms.
The hosts were helpful, friendly and accommodating in every way. I was greeted with a delicious slice of home made banana bread on the counter and an excellent selection of teas. Too bad "hidden gem" is so overused as this truly is one.

Just a lovely few blocks' walk from Shattuck Street shops and restaurants, this is the perfect B&B for a work or vacation stay! Inside, Yuko's Indonesian and Japanese wall hangings soothe the soul, and, just outside the door, garden greens and flowers blend with Mort's organic sculptures and a coi pool to warm the heart. Step out the front gate for a neighborhood walk, a jaunt to the UC Berkeley campus or the scenic North Berkeley hills, or a Bart ride into San Francisco, and come 'home' to a refreshing cup of tea and a restful sleep. We shall definitely return to Garden Cottage and its gentle, accommodating host and hostess.

Room Tip: Both Las Flores and the Cottage offer quiet, comfortable ambience and amenities!
