It is a shame that the major street leading to the University of California is full of home street people and beggars.
Run down buildings, run down people, dirty. I went to UCBerkeley and lived off Telegraph. Easier to take the scene when you are 20 years old than 65.
The heart of the counterculture/hipster/student shopping scene butted up against the campus. It has seen better days, but there are usually some artisans selling jewelry, etc. to amuse the tourists.
I'm not a bohemian college student any more, so the homeless youth sitting around with their dogs are just sad. Also, too much incense in the air, and tchockes for sale.
Berkeley is a different culture - go here if you want to see the current college crowd blend with throwbacks from the sixties. Some good places to eat and drink
