When we travel, my wife and I usually look out for the best beer joints. We took a trip out to Berkeley to check out Triple Rock and were pleased.
While a lot of breweries tend to be touristy, Triple Rock has more of the local watering hole vibe to it. Monday Night Football was on during our visit, so there was a large contingent of neighborhood fans all out. Our server was excellent and very friendly. When our burger came out a little wrong, she quickly apologized and brought out a new plate. The food was standard pub fare, but was tasty and a solid meal.
The beer was excellent and reasonably priced. If you're a real beer snob (i.e. - you only drink $13 Belgian beers), you may not be as impressed, but it's much better than a lot of the watery and over-flavored brewery beer at the touristy places. Plus, it's a great value. We tried both Harvest Selections, the IPA, and their house Pale Ale. When we couldn't decide on a second round, our server brought out three of her favorites for us to try. All the beers had wonderful balanced flavors.
If you're in Berkeley for a while, Triple Rock is great for a quick bite and pint.
