“Great Family Vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2011

This is a great place for a family. Convenient to the ski area and lodge, but far enough away when you want to be far away. My family and I stay there in the Winter and Summer. The rooms have their own kitchen, so we did not constantly have to go to the restaurant. We like to cook our own meals sometimes. Skiing in winter and in summer, it was just a great place to enjoy the quiet, rest, read and hike right outside the back door. I know I will go back again.

We rented the whole downstairs "The Bear's Lair". We were expecting rustic but this is an old rambling mess of a place. Two sheets of plywood was the counter top. Circuits kept tripping and the mtce people had to go to someone else's room to re-set them! Wires sticking out of walls, ceilings - very unsafe for kids. Beds not made - just what you want to do after driving for hours to get there. Couch had about 1/2 bag of dog food behind the cushions - not kidding! The cleaning crew (who doesn't clean your room until after you leave) would routinely walk through our unit to get to the locked laundry. jacuzzi didn't work - not that we wanted to sit in the garage in a hot tub with all the wiring issues. No cell service. There was very limited parking (5 spaces); locals would come and park so they could cross country ski out the back. On the upside the kitchen utensils etc was well stocked and there was sledding out the backdoor.

Great place to stay close to Bear Ski resort. It is quiet and close. It was a quick drive to the mountian, and set in a very pretty location. Easy to find right off the highway. We had Unit 22 and our son loved the bed and we had a great time.

One of the worst inn / hotel experiences my family has ever had.

We stayed in Room 22 at Tamarack Pines Inn for two nights in Feb. 2008. Here is what we experienced:

1. Sewage / septic smell - the bathroom had a constant smell of sewage / septic system. Even with windows wide open for several hours, the smell did not go away.

2. Unusable mattresses - the queen mattress and rollaway bed mattress both had extremely worn-out springs. My wife and I hardly slept due to the poor mattress and our daughter had difficulty sleeping on the worn-out rollaway mattress.

3. Misleading advertising. There is a web site that advertises this inn stating that each room has a refrigerator and microwave oven. Our room has neither - the fridge and microwave are in a shared, unheated area with no working lights.

We just spent 2 nights at Tamarack Lodge, which is the 'European' lodge associated with Tamarack Pines Inn. Many of the rooms have shared bathrooms, but we stayed in a room in the 'chalet' that had a private bath, TV/VCR, and microwave/fridge (for only slightly more, the Mt Reba room). The place is incredibly family friendly but also good for couples, like us, without kids. The breakfast (included) is a fun smorgasbord of hot and cold foods. There is a large common area with a fully equipped common kitchen available for guest use, games, TVs, and kid's play area. Outside, since we were there in the winter, we enjoyed using the complimentary snowshoes to explore the lodge grounds (which are extensive) and sleds on the small sledding hill. Just to warn you, though, we were disappointed in our room at first because some parts of the place are very old-school (like the carpets) and could stand to be redone. However, after we got settled in, we found the place comfortable, and the other guests and lodge owners were super friendly. The place is about 4 miles from Bear Valley downhill, 2 miles from Bear Valley cross-county (one of the groomed x-c trails can actually be accessed right from the lodge), and 5-6 miles from the point where Hwy 4 is closed for the season. With a sno-park permit, you can park at the closure gate and ski up the road to Lake Alpine, and then 3-4 total miles up to a great viewpoint. P.S. When I was a kid, I would have loved going to a place like Tamarack Lodge--lots of new friends to be made, activities, places to explore, etc!
