“Amazing views but frightening surroundings”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2010

We stayed here as part of a fantastic cycling holiday around the highlands. The view from the room across the water over to Mull was impressive, and we witnessed one of the most incredible sunsets I've ever seen.
But this comes at a price - abrasive staff, grubby room, fairly inedible and overpriced food, and a communal bathroom and toilet that leave you feeling slightly nauseous.
But the price was cheap, and we still managed to have a fun time (though we did leave v early the next day. Quickly. )

The Lochaline Hotel is in a fabulous location facing over the Sound of Mull (see photos for the view from our bedroom). It is a small hotel which doesn't have many facilities but we found it to be a very peaceful & relaxing palce to stay. The hotel is just round the corner from the ferry over to Mull.

The hotel is a bit old-fashioned (no rooms are ensuite) and in places it does look a little tired eg the stair carpet was a threadbare in places. If you can accept those "surface" imperfections then I think you will find that the location, food & staff compensate.

It was reasonably priced (£25 each B&B) and we had a good sized room, overlooking the Sound of Mull. The beds were comfy & all was spotlessly clean. The showeroom /toilets are down the landing from the rooms. There are books for guests to read. There was a small TV in the room. It was very quiet & we slept well.

There is a well-stocked bar with a pool table & a newly refurbished restaurant/breakfast room. We were both very impressed with food: good quality, large portions well presented & reasonable priced. Breakfast was the usual B&B fare of cereal, toast & a cooked breakfast (good & plenty of it).

There is white sandy beach outside the hotel & the area is popular with divers.

Service was generally good. We found the chef, waitress & lady manager/owner to be absolutely superb (kind, helpful, chatty & with a sense of humour). The chap who showed us to our room & serves behing the bar seems a man of few words.

Overall, it is an older hotel & appears a bit tired in places. There is not much going on the evenings (just a quiet pint in the bar) but if you are the sort of person that doesn't mind that & likes gorgeous views, hearty food & getting out in the fresh air then you will like it here.
