“Great hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2013

We loved staying at the Padre. It was our first visit, and we were extremely impressed with the staff, the comfortable room, the food... we will definitely stay at the Padre the next time we are in Bakersfield. The beds were really the most comfortable that we have ever had in a hotel. Chris K. and Tim P. were very professional and helpful, and the valet parking is a plus.

Husband's Point of view:
Don't stay here on weekends if you want sleep! We booked a room Saturday night only to find our room BOOMING from the music downstairs. After the music stops the halls turn into an "after party"... ok if you are one of the drunks, not so good if you need some rest. When I called the front desk around 2 a.m. I was told "...well, you signed a waiver...". Prospective customers beware that waiver in advance! The Padre Hotel (in my opinion) caters to the local weekend party crowd, not weary travelers.

My Point of view:
This is the absolute worst hotel I have ever stayed in! You are asked to sign a waiver when you first sign in that states that the music is loud and if available, offered quieter rooms away from the lounge. You won't know how bad it is until it's too late. What the waiver needs to say is: "The music is so loud that it will actually vibrate the fillings out of your teeth and you won't be able to identify any of it as actual music, it sounds more like a freight train rumbling through your room. Oh and when you call down to complain that you cannot sleep, we will not offer you any resolution. We will simply state that you signed a waiver. Oh and by the way, once the music finally stops, the people who were partying downstairs will then bring it upstairs and start partying in the hallways and in their rooms that are probably right next door to where you are trying to sleep. They will scream, laugh and slam doors. This will carry on until everyone passes out!"
After a night of no sleep and a call downstairs in the early morning hours, we once again let them know how horrible it was when we checked out. Their answer was again, "You signed a waiver". I asked them if I had known how awful it was actually going to be and had said it was unacceptable and did not want to stay there would they have refunded our money. The answer was no. All this information needs to be presented to you at the time you are making the reservation, not when you have been driving a long time and standing in the lobby and just wanting to go relax somewhere.

I don't know about the other rooms, but the Forty-Winks also needs to come with a warning about the design of the bathroom. There is no lock on the bathroom door, but that's really the least of your worries considering the glass wall between the bedroom and the bathroom allows anyone outside the bathroom to see you shower and do your business. There is a sheer white curtain that can be pulled across that is see through and controlled by the person on the outside. There are just some things you don't want to see another person do no matter how long you have been together!

We asked for a refund and they have refused. If you know your conditions are bad enough on the weekends that it required you to create your "waiver", then maybe you shouldn't rent out the rooms on the weekends to people who aren't there to party.

Room Tip: Seriously........ Have you ever been asked to sign a noise waiver upon arrival in a hotel before?

I'm so sorry to hear that your visit was not the typical Padre experience. The waiver on the sign in sheet is a tool to help the team communicate with our guests about the weekend events. I will make sure the information is given in a more conducive manner and all of our guests are taken care of at any time of day or night. We hope you can come visit us again so that we can share the truly unique and enjoyable experience the Padre Hotel offers.

I agreed with many of the other posters if this hotel was located in LA or New York city, it would cost $300-$400. The room was very fashionably decorated with a see through walk in shower. The bar/restaurant was crowded on a week night with many beautiful people. The food was good and the service was warm and friendly. It takes the valet a little bit longer to bring back the car but every is very friendly and courteous. The Italian restaurant around the corner is also very nice with great reasonably priced food and excellent, upscale service.

Room Tip: All rooms are really nice, hip and fashionably designed

My husband had a 2-day business trip in Bakersfield. Our hosts put us up at the Padre Hotel since it was in the heart of downtown close to his work. While the hotel has been remodeled recently, the decor was cold for my taste. The room and bath was all shades of grey with a little art deco thrown in. Everything was neat and clean. Our room had no tub. I didn't think I needed to ask for one. There was no mini-fridge in the room even though temperatures were over 100 outside and one needed to stay hydrated constantly. Bottles of water in the room were $3.00. There was also no chest of draws, only a closet.

Unfortunately, the bed was very soft and sagging. My husband barely slept both nights. We would have complained but for a short stay we did not want to take the time to move rooms, and we didn't know if all the rooms had soft beds.

You must have your key to use the elevator to guest floors. We later found out why.

There was a restaurant, bar and coffee spot in the lobby. We ate breakfast at the restaurant and the food was pretty good. Coffee was Illy from Italy. At night the restaurant is a very popular local bar and is crowded with young people and loud music. This didn't bother us as we were on the 4th floor.

All of that would have been just ok except the second night we were there, the young woman who had arranged our stay was mugged and severely beaten (her nose was broken) by a youth gang outside the hotel while simply running to her car to retrieve her phone. Now please understand that this is not the fault of the Padre Hotel, but just demonstrates how mean the streets of Bakersfield can be. We were advised by our hosts when we arrived not to wander the streets at night and we learned why.

The Padre is an ok enough hotel. The staff was very pleasant, especially the valet staff who always greeted us and remembered our car. But I doubt that we would stay there again because of the location. I did walk around in the day time and found a lot of interesting antique stores nearby. But you have to be very careful at night. However, this is probably more of a general observation about Bakersfield than about the Padre Hotel.

Room Tip: If you want a tub, you'd better ask for it.

We live in Bakersfield but had wanted to stay at the Padre for my husband's birthday. We had a great time. We stayed in the Head Honcho room. We loved the view, king size bed and Jacuzzi tub. The staff was very friendly. It was the first Friday of the month so we were able to enjoy the art fair going on down town. The hotel was also hosting a fundraiser for a dog rescue group Marley's Mutts. So, we were able to enjoy the dogs, have a drink and donate to a good cause at the second floor bar.

You would pay a lot of money if this hotel was in a nice place ($300-$400 per night in SF or LA). It's not! But the beds are so comfortable, the food is great and it's very inexpensive (Room Service is very reasonable). Prepare for some oddities with service. I made online reservations. Never got confirmed. So I called the hotel. They said there was no record of a reservation, so I made another. Arrived at 10 p.m. for check-in and found they had two reservations! We have never had smooth sailing with check-in, but it amuses us. The staff are very sweet and friendly.
We also had a very persistent maid banging on our door at 8:15 a.m., just wanting to know if we were gone yet, she was mortified when she realized she woken us up. So be sure to put that hilarious, "Whoa! Do Not Disturb" sign on the door if you want to sleep in. My sister is a hotel snob, she finally took a chance, zipping over from the 5 Freeway on a SF trip to stay at the Padre and now she is a big fan, even toying with the idea of making it a destination for a party. You will love this hotel!

Room Tip: The Maverick rooms are worth the extra $. Stay above the 5th floor and you won't hear the noise...

Stayed overnight on the way from Napa to Las Vegas. Centrally located and a real gem of a hotel. The hotel is trendy and rooms are clean. Didn't try the funky restaurant. Tip for overnight stays who drive. U don't need to valet ur car. Keep it off the street in the public garage that allows free parking for three hours continuously. It closes at midnight but Heck there's nothing to do in bakersfield after 1700 that's not in the Padre anyway. This tip saved us 10 bucks plus gratuity too.
