“An experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2013

Think the reviews sum up this place well, you'll love it or hate it, but at least it's an experience ! We met up there with a friend who has lived all his life in Bakersfield, we had walked there from our hotel and it felt as though we had entered an industrial estate in the dark, it certainly doesn't have the frontage appeal of a restaurant.

With the vegetables open on the table going cold from time we got our soup it was far from ideal, because they were cold by time the meat dish arrived. There was certainly plenty of luke warm food, more than enough, but the general setup didn't appeal to me.

It was certainly an experience, as I have never encountered a similar establishment before, but once was certainly enough for me.

“Country Basque cooking at its best!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

This is not gourmet cooking for gourmands! This is authentic country basque food. A place for the locals. In an old section of town near the railroad station, And i would not miss eating at the Wool Growers for the best Michelin star restaurant. We always chat with the bartender over a glass of house wine before dinner. At our table a carafe of house wine. We love the pickled tongue, vegetable soup, red beans, and salsa set up. For the main course the lamb chops cannot be beat. Numerous other entrees with xtras including salad, spaghetti, french fries, lettuce salad, tomato salad, green beans and sour dough bread. Always simply sherbet or blue cheese for desert. The waitresses are very experienced, fast and efficient and friendly. A different type of experience.

“Still rhe best for kunch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

stopped by Sept 4 for lunch.

Stopped by for lunch Sept 4. No waiting but very full as usual. For the price cant beat it: soup, beans, salsa, salad, tomatoes, cheese, tongue, entree was lamb, big platter of the best fries, and creamed corn + french bread and butter. wait staff still the best.

“Real Basque food, really family style.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013 via mobile

I'm from the other side of the Sierras (east) and Kern county--100 miles away. But people in Kern county know this is the real deal for authentic Basque food and experience. Be prepared for lots of courses and lots of food. And some that you may have never had or dreamed of having. It's noisy, happy, friendly, and hearty eating. It's been a Bakersfield tradition for decades!
