We absolutely LOVED Rhodes Resort (Rhodes Hall Plantation)! Surprising, tropical, hidden gem in Jamaica. I found it online while looking for a romantic, quiet getaway with my fiancé. It had high reviews on many different sites. We only booked the first two nights and had planned on being on the move to places in Negril and Montego...booking as we go for 10 days. Well, five minutes after arriving, we booked the rest of our trip to stay here! We have been to Jamaica about 6 times prior, to several different parts of Jamaica. We had recently stayed in Negril on Seven Mile Beach at a smaller hotel and also at a larger, all-inclusive resort in Runway Bay. Enjoyed both but Rhodes was exactly what we wanted for this trip...and future trips. It's only a short drive to get to Negril (about 10 mins...8 miles). We had rented a car in Montego because we like to go exploring but Rhodes can provide trips to/from airport and to/from Negril during your stay.
Marcelle and David (the owners) are wonderful people! Very relaxed, laid-back and make you feel like you're a houseguest to their home. No big elaborate check-in, upgraded us to the Coconut room in The Sunshine building, which overlooked one of the beaches and pool. We had a kitchenette, loft, high wood-beamed ceiling, and balcony...a beautiful and comfortable room. We had satellite TV but (if TV is important to you) check beforehand as some rooms do not have this. We picked up snacks and drinks on our way to resort. We brought our own snorkels and fins (because we were diving on this trip too) but they do rent them there for a minimal charge. They will also hand you a cell phone when you arrive for your duration so you're able to contact them, the restaurant, or make local calls. Nice touch!
Even when other guests are staying there, you still feel like the place is exclusively yours. Completely private, small beaches and saltwater pool. AMAZING reef (with natural springs) where you can snorkel all day, every day (we even went at night with our diving lights). It's about a mile long and you can reach it right from the beach! We swam with huge eaglerays and stingrays along with all sorts of colorful fish. We went horseback riding in the hills followed by SWIMMING with the horses! We have never experienced anything like this and it's something I will always cherish. The guides were very nice, picked fresh mangoes for us and described different trees and their medicinal uses along the ride. I am a huge fan of peacocks and loved seeing them roam the property (along with a large rooster, goose, guinea hen, etc...). "Kevin" the peacock would let you pet him and he also left plenty of his beautiful long feathers for me each morning that I brought home. It was mating season so they were all throwing up their feathers and dancing for us. The grounds are very well kept, tropical with all kinds of fruit trees, flowers and huge bamboo. I think they have over 500 acres. They have a crocodile sanctuary that we saw on our horse ride. We also both got nice massages in one of the cabanas on property.
We opted for the pay-as-you-go meals at the restaurant because we have our favorite jerk spots and restaurants around Negril and like to try new places. But we did eat here the majority of the time. I believe that they do have an all-inclusive meal plan and they also have a complementary continental breakfast available. The restaurant is up on a hill, outdoor patio, overlooking the property and cove. Lovely view! *Recommend insect repellent for the evening mosquitoes* Food is good and the staff was wonderful! I see a lot of posts on how it takes awhile to get your food. Well, it's the islands and they do prepare everything from scratch when you order. Not a big deal for us at all (relax...it's vacation!) but you can always tell them in advance what you would like for the next meal or next day...they are very accommodating. If they didn't have something that we wanted, Janet or Marvin would have it there the next day without even asking. And they always had a big pot of Blue Mountain coffee on our table for me each morning when we arrived. Since it was the off-season and not many people staying there, we would let them know whether we would be there for the next meals...kind of how you would let Mom know if you'd be around for dinner. It's very 'homey' like that. :) One morning they surprised us by delivering breakfast in room. They can also arrange for meals to be served on your balcony.
Note: This is not one of your typical Jamaican all-inclusive resorts with bars all around, constant noise and activities at all hours. It's not a five star resort with 24-hour service. Rhodes is a beautiful, clean, quiet, relaxing, plantation-style place. With the reef, horseback riding, pool...there's still plenty to do. And you can always get a 10-minute shuttle ride from them into Negril to visit the popular Seven-mile beach, Rick's Cafe up in the cliffs (watch the cliff divers and sunset), shops, bars and restaurants. Recommendations for jerk chicken/pork in Negril: Best in the West, Ossies and Bourbon Beach. Norma's is a great restaurant that we like to go to located on the beach.
Will add some photos I took around the property.
Hope this is a helpful review. Can't praise it enough. Thank you to all the staff, Marcelle and David for a wonderful vacation! We will definitely see you all again!
