My husband and I took a trip down to Bimini for Mothers Day weekend. We took the sea plane for the first time from Ft. Lauderdale! That was a very neat experience! We stayed at Bimini Big Game and it apparently was the hotel of choice for most travelers (even if they were staying at the higher end resort Bimini Bay...because even many of the guests that made reservations or owned homes at Bimini Bay were hanging out, dining and using the facilities at Big Game. That should be an indication right there that this is a great hotel. It is a quaint property, that reminded me of what the islands used to be like in the 70's and 80's. I personally like the change of pace of a smaller hotel vs the big box hotels and I used to work for and love Marriott!
We did two excursions. The first day we chartered the 60 ft viking with captain Chase. It is a beautiful fishing boat-extremely well maintained and actually the nicest fishing boat I've ever been on. We trolled and caught 2 barracudas and a 200lb 8 foot long blue Marlin! If you want to catch big game fish, do that method. I personally would have preferred to bottom fish to catch fish we could bring back to eat.
The 2nd day we went snorkling on the same boat as the dive boat. We went to a pretty reef out in the open ocean on the first stop then we went to "shark alley". Everyone had the option to dive or snorkle with Reef Sharks. There were quite a few sharks -big ones and even a few black tips. We also saw the largest and most diverse types and colours of fish I have ever seen , whether in st. Marten or St. Thomas or the Keys. We saw a HUGE eagle ray followed by a couple of other smaller sting rays. We saw one baby sea turtle and a very large sea turtle. The water is so clear and so blue.
The rooms at Bimini bay were very clean and the staff is friendly. The food at the restaurant was probably the best on the island. Michael the GM and his team have done an incredible job promoting the hotel, its water sports and the service.
We will Definitely be back!
It is pretty safe if you want to visit some of the local venues, bars and restaurants. It is an extremely small island and the locals are not going to do anything to ruin tourism-because that is the only industry on the island.
