“Really cozy and cheap”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2012

Really cozy, moutaing guest house, balinese style! Clean, staff speaks moderate good english for indonesian! Small rooms but more than enough for the sunrise in bromo, the hot water shoewer is outside in a separte toilet, kinda awkward, and the wat flow could be better!

It is one of a very small selection of hotels to see Mt. Bromo from but out of the budget choices a fairly decent one. Very small rooms but comfortable, though the walls are paper thin and it's hard to get to sleep for the early start when people are still awake. The staff are efficient and will organise the sunrise tour for you (breakfast is provided). The restaurant is expensive but if you continue up the hill for 10 minutes (walking) you will find an excellent little warung for good nasi campur.

stayed here 2 nights as 'check-point'for Mt Bromo and Villages trekking trip in early Jun. Located 15km from biggest village at Bromo area, Sukapura, this hostel is nice for staying, it is far away from crat er, leaa crowded. Standard room 200,000Rp, in low season, with hot shower outside the room and toilet inside the room. nice and small garden, room is clean. owner speak quite well Inggeris.

When asking for laundry service, owner said they got no dryer, SUN as their dryer machine.haha. anyway, when i reached at 2 oclock early morning, asking hotwater, the staffs said NO water, luckily my tour agent bring me to his driver's house, 2km above Yoshi, than take hotwater there.

remember to bring jacket , as temperature at this area is 10-15 celcious, sometime nighttime can drop to below 10. it is 1500m above sealevel.

We stayed here one night as part of a trip to see the sunrise over Mount Bromo. We were told this used to be a nice hotel but it was glaringly obvious this was not the case anymore.

It was quite chilly in the area due to the high altitude, which made the lack of hot water in the en-suite bathroom (with only a toilet and basin) frustrating. If we wanted a shower, we had to walk through the resort with all our toiletries, clothes and towel to a separate hot water shower room (there were only two for the whole resort). If they happened to be occupied, we had to queue outside or take a long walk back to the room and chance coming back later (when it might still have been occupied – there was no way of knowing). I chose to skip showering that night. There was a sign in the en-suite bathroom urging guests not to attempt to “shower” using water from the basin as obviously other people had the same shower frustrations. The ice cold water made the option of bathing using the basin water very undesirable anyway.

All the furniture inside the room was extremely dusty and I dreaded putting anything down. The bed spread looked like it hadn’t been washed in years. The only working socket was in the bathroom where its location made it almost impossible to recharge our phones.

The walls were paper thin; we could hear people talking and laughing loudly well into the night and the volume made it feel as if they were in our room. This was especially annoying as we were set to wake at 3am for the climb to see the Mount Bromo sunrise.

There was a separate prayer room which was convenient but the carpet was caked with an inch of dust. The food in the restaurant tasted as if it had been taken out of tins and heated up. The service was also extremely slow.

Room Tip: Pay extra to get a room with en-suite shower and hot water.

Stayed here as part of a trip to Bromo and Ijen. We arrived at night so wasn't much to see or do except eat dinner (not much to write home about) and drink beer. We left again really early the next day so it was just a place to sleep. The room was ok, nothing special – stayed in the deluxe cottage, which after hearing other comments on standard rooms, seems worth the extra money for private shower and no noise. One warning it really does get cold at that altitude so take your jumpers!

Room Tip: Pay the extra and go for a deluxe bungalow or cottage

A good starting point for doing the Bromo excursion. Yes, a bit run down, but the place has a certain charm, food is all right, beer's available...what else do you want ?

We booked a trip to Mt. Bromo while in Yogyakarta. The tour company offered minivan transport to Bromo and included various hotel and excursion packages. We chose transit and one night at Yoschi's for 260,000 RP and intended to stay an extra night or two in order to explore Mt. Bromo and the national park.

Following 14 hours of travel in a HOT, stuffy, sweaty van we arrived at nearly 11 pm at Yoschi's. Of course, the restaurant was closed (go figure, even though they must get late tour arrivals all the time), and we were showed to a dingy, non-cozy room with a bathroom that needed serious updating as it was dirty, dingy, and had this odd "well" under the shower head and NO HOT WATER (so you know, it is cold at night on Mt. Bromo). We asked the front desk immediately about the water because we needed to take showers after the 14 hour inferno bus ride and they said none of the rooms have hot water but that they have a shared shower house with hot water. We showed them the tour package sheet because they obviously have an affiliation with said company and how it said that we would have a hot water ensuite bathroom. Their response was that the other two hotels at the same price point (I can't write the names in this review) as Yoschi's have ensuite hot water bathrooms. The tour company completely misleads you into thinking that if you choose one of the three accommodation options at this price point, then you will get a hot water shower in your room, but you don't. I asked to call the tour company office in Probolinggo but the Yoschi staff said no. Why would they do this? I don't know, but clearly they didn't want us to complain. They kept saying that the guys in the tour office were sleeping. After 14 hours on a bus and needing to get up at 3 am for the sunrise on Bromo, I didn't really care if they were sleeping. They need to do their jobs and respond to problems accordingly.

After having the Yoschi staff laugh at me and tell me I couldn't use the phone, I retreated to the room and decided to suss out the hot water shower house. I've traveled a lot and will use shared bathrooms; the issue is that we were led to believe that we were getting a private bathroom AND the shared shower house was absolutely disgusting. I walked in to find three inches of water backed up, bugs, hair, and basically nothing welcoming. I ended up taking a cold shower in our room and nearly froze because it was so chilly at night and there was no heat in Yoschi's.

The next day after seeing the Bromo sunrise at 5:30 am, we decided we would definitely move on to Bali that day and not stick around Mt. Bromo (the scenery is gorgeous but honestly, there is nothing there by way of a tourist town and after you've seen the sunrise, you've pretty much seen it all). Since you are basically stranded on the mountain and there is NO INTERNET, we asked the Yoschi staff about booking a bus to Bromo for that morning. The main guy, ADI, PROMISED us that we would have a nice bus with good aircon. We emphasized how important this was to us since it would be a very long journey (estimated at 8 hours) and that the bus from Yogya to Bromo was boiling. Since we didn't book the bus to Bali originally as part of a tour package, we had to pay more for the minivan. Most people on the bus to Bali were the same people who came with us from Yogyakarta bus since they booked the Bali bus originally, they paid about half of what we did. Adi told us that we were going to have a nice minivan but basically everyone was put onto the same buses (no distinction despite price differentials).

The bus ride to Bali was miserable. It was SO hot even after asking the driver to turn up the aircon. I don't know if it's merely that the aircon on these buses doesn't work properly since they are old but I frequently get the impression that the driver is trying to save on gas so he can pocket some of the gas money. Either way, it was awful and really hot AND we didn't arrive in Bali until 11 pm at night even though we were told we would arrive at 8 pm.

Also, halfway through the journey to Bali, the driver asked us about where we were being dropped in Bali. Adi told us that if we paid more, we could be dropped directly in Kuta near hotels and restaurants instead of in Denpasar. Everyone else on the bus was apparently going to Denpasar so the driver didn't want to make an extra stop in Kuta for us. We explained that Adi offered us a ticket to Kuta for a higher price, which we paid, and we showed him the receipt. But he was making it clear that he didn't want to take us there. At this point, I was so on edge with everything that I was worried he wouldn't take us to Kuta and wouldn't refund the extra money we paid for that service. We talked to him and another guy who was working with our driver and explained that we didn't want any surprises once we arrived in Bali and that we had paid to be dropped in Kuta. Thankfully, the driver did take us, but asked for more money! We told him no and that we had paid more to be dropped in Kuta. Luckily, once in the town, we were not trapped and said no, thanks, and walked away from the minivan.

Don't stay at Yoschi's on Mt. Bromo.
