“Loved The Valentin”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2009

My husband and myself along with another couple went Nov 8th-15th. Both couples were coming for anniversaries. We booked our vacation through cheapcaribbean.com and had private ground transfers for the four of us to the Valentin. The drive is about 20 minutes.
When we arrived; as everyone else has said we were greeted with a glass of champaigne and were immediately checked in. We had booked a swim up room and noticed immediately that we were not in a swim up room. We questioned check in about this and were told that we had been upgraded to an ocean front room. We are assuming because people had requested to not be ocean front do to the hurricane and we were concerned that we may not like the rooms but both couples were very happy with the outcome. We were in buiding 12. I would say this actually the best beachfront building to be in. There is a slight walk (maybe 20 seconds) to the beach through vegetation but you can see the ocean from your room. In this building you virtually have a private beach with a bar and tiki palapas and lounge chairs to get some shade when it gets hot. This is the best stretch of the beach beacause it's not near the boardwalk and is more secluded from the main beach. Once we got up the next morning we all agreed we were glad to not have a swim up room. We would have never spent anytime there. The main pool is a much nicer location to be with 2 swim up bars and lots of lounging. Be there by 7am to reserve a spot!
When everyone says the complex is huge they are definently telling the truth! If you dont like to have to walk any distance this is not the resort for you. I personally had no problem with this as we ate and drank so much that it made me feel as I was working some of it off without having to use the gym :)
The staff was absolutely amazing. Elaina, Jaime and Antonio were great with activities around the pool. They always had a smile on their faces and were great fun. My favorite pool waitress was Louisa. She was such a doll. She always remembered what I was drinking everyday and if I was not on a lounge chair she would make sure to find me in the pool. She knew who we were with and would ask were our spouses were when they werent around. She was always calling me mamacita and always had a smile and wave for me. Everyday they bring around an exotic animal for you to have your pic taken with if you would like and sell them for $10 in the plaza at 8pm; monkeys, iguanas, birds and a large snake. Its cheaper to buy all the ones you want at the end of your trip fyi.
The food was amazing. We loved Ginger and ate the tepan style once and went back to the sushi bar 2 times. Many people rave about the french cuisine but none of us were fans at all. We dont care for frois gras and most of the dishes they served there. The lobster pot was very yummy and it is very close to the main pool and the ocean.
My husbands complaint was with all the top shelf liquor there was no crown royal (his drink of choice). The only complaint us ladies had were the mosquitos. If you dont bring bug spray you will be buying some in the gift shop guarenteed and will spend about $15. Secondly the lighting at night is poor. We brought flashlights and they helped tremendously coming back to our rooms from dinner. In all it is a beautiful resort with amazing staff and service. We highly recommend it!

My wife and I just returned from a week at the Valentin. It was our 20th Wedding Anniversay, and we had an amazing time! This was our first time in Mexico, so we had nothing to compare our stay to. If there are nicer resorts than this, then they must really be amazing! At check-in, I asked if there was any chance we could get a room upgrade, and after a little bit of checking, she found a room that was available right off the beach! We were thrilled with the accomodations! Not only was our room close to the beach, but it was also close to the Lobster Pot/Steak House Restaurants as well as the main pool. The room was very clean. When we first got to the room, there were rose petals on the bed, along with two towels formed into swans. The one thing that was ever so slightly annoying was that some days, our room was not cleaned until after 3:00 pm. I feel bad even mentioning this, because the other service at the resort was really amazing ! We had read a lot of reviews about this resort before going, and found it laughable that people could actually complain about the weather during their stay....like the resorts can somehow control the weather!!?!! Other complaints we had read were helpful regarding the mosquitos and also the limited availabilty of rafts for the pool. We used this info and took along our own bug spray, as well as our own rafts. I highly recommend that anyone reading this review, make sure the DEET in the bug spray you take is greater than 15%! We took Tropical Off, which had 5% DEET, and it barely helped. We ended up spending $13 for a small can of Off at the resort's store.

There are so many things that made our stay amazing, but a lot of other people have already listed them. A brief list of our favorite memories are: The buffets and fire show on the terrace in front of the lobby area; breakfast buffet every morning was awesome; swim-up bars, and free drinks!

If you are considering this resort, I would highly recommend it!! It is hard to imagine how some people rated this place the worst place they have ever stayed??????????

I have read the recent bad post and say WOW. My wife and I are at the resort as we post. We have been here since Sat. morning and today is Tuesday. Everything has been perfect. No naked people, (that we have seen) and everyone seems to be maintaining themselves with the alcohol. We have not had a bad meal yet, we have been to the Lobster Pot, Italian, and French restaurants. Tonight will be the Steak house. So far NOTHING has been less than perfectly prepared and presented. The staff here is amazing. Some posters complained about the lack of buffets for dinner, I have not left any meal hungry. The breakfast at La Marche is buffet style with a omelet bar that is great. I suppose the mosquito issue must be worse after a storm. So far we have not needed bug spray, as we have only been bitten a couple of times. The room we paid for was the Junior Suite and got upgraded to a oceanfront Emerald Suite, and we are very pleased, we cannot comment on any other rooms as we have not seen them. We will post back after the trip to follow up.

My husband and I travelled to the Valentin Imperial for our honeymoon from November 7 - 14. We had a fantastic time and the resort was beautiful! After reading some of the negative comments that some people have written we were shocked!!! One lady complained about not being upgraded during the same week we stayed at this resort. This was because the resort was at 100% capacity. We did a couple of excursions and spoke to other people from different resorts and most were not even compairable! Very popular resort and we met people who have visited this resort many times before. The food, staff, beach, pool, entertainment & rooms were all wonderful. As for the mosquitos...they are around and biting but they do smoke every night and this should be expected when visiting a resort in the carribean. The beach was a little rocky in some areas due to the hurricane that passed through. The staff worked hard to clean the beach EVERY SINGLE DAY! As for the drunk people...you are going to see that at any ALL INCLUSIVE resort you go to, give me a break!!!!! I have nothing bad to say about this resort and hope that anyone considering booking at this resort will disregard any negative comments that they may read. The resort exceeded our expectations in all areas and we can't wait to visit again! There couldn't have been a better place to celebrate our honeymoon!!!

We stayed at this resort early November and were not impressed we are in our early 50's and travel twice a year to Cuba, Punta Cana and mostly the Mayan. I booked at the Valentin because of the reviews and we got a good price (be careful were you go because of the money you pay). We had bad weather because of the hurricane but tried to make the best of it. We left twice to go to Playa just to get away from the resort not to blame the Valentine but the clientelle that were staying at the resort I have never seen so many drunk people at a resort doing crazy things (by the way people should keep their close on and not stand naked on their balcony they have no class). We did not get upgraded and received the standard room which the bathtub faucet did not work and our patio door was broken and took 3 days for them to fix. If they put you beside the elevator asked to be moved it kept us up all night.

In short the beach is terrible not enough chairs and huts I had to get up at 6:00am to put towels on the chairs like everyone else. Very rocky even down abit to the left the rocks cut my ankles up getting out of the water. It was even hard to find chairs around the pool. We had bug spray and after bite with us and still received tons of bits, never has this happened in any other resort we have been to which is many. The sports bar one night let some drunk guy behind the bar to serve drinks who was rude and drunk?? and continued to be crazy in the court yard (where was security). Not sure if it was the bad weather and the staff were trying to make the customers happy but by getting them drunk should not have been the answer. There were numerous things that we saw during the week which was sickening and I will not get into one like the man on the balcony and a women walking around with a dildo doing things to it and women grabbing their husbands body parts in plain view of everyone. We will never go back to this resort and could not wait to end our vacation and come back home.

One good thing about this resort is the staff and the food that's about it.
I would go back to the Iberostar, Barcelo and Riu and Bahia Resorts but never this one.

We just returned from the Valentin and I have to say it was incredible. We have stayed at many resorts in Mexico and this was one of the top. The food was delicious. We stayed 13 days and never tired of the fabulous shrimp, lobster, steak, etc. Even the buffets were very good. The service was top notch. The resort was beautiful. It is a big resort and there is a lot of walking, but that isn't always a bad thing when you eat a lot. The beach was good, the pool was beautiful and clean. I'd return and probably will.

My only caution is there were a lot of mosquitos while we were there. The resort did spray, but if you go, take your own spray. They get bad when the sun goes down.

We traveled in a group of over forty "friends" - most of whom hang out at our local watering hole at the Southern Jersey Shore. The age group ranged from 82 down to early 20's, about half couples, and half singles. The trip was arranged through Apple Tours, who bundled the round trip air travel from Philadelphia to Cancun, a bus back and forth to the resort, and the resort package.

Because of tropical storm turned hurricane Ida, the weather was lousy - hardly any sun at all, and lots of rain. (We are sitting here at the Shore now in the middle of the same stupid storm - how often in a lifetime do you get hit by the same storm twice?) Luckily, it was nice and warm, and we made the best of it. The resort provides umbrellas in each room, and the main pathways between the major buildings are covered.

To top it off, the Phillies lost the World Series, and the Eagles lost to the Cowboys in the same week.

Just a few comments on topics raised in other reviews:

*Yes, bring a flashlight - it is dark, and the layout is confusing until you figure it out.
*Yes, bring bug spray. We never thought we needed it, but we are from the South Jersey Shore where there are real mosquitoes! If you are susceptible to mosquitoes, you will want the spray.
*Yes, bring good walking shoes with non-skid soles. The resort is spread out, and the tile gets slippery when wet.
*Yes, bring plenty of small bills. The service was terrific, and we never felt pressured to tip, but when we did tip, it was really appreciated. We took $50 in ones, and $50 in fives, and only went through about $60 worth in six days.
*Yes, if you want a big room, upgrade; but we had what I think was a standard room, with a jacuzzi tub separating the bathroom from the bedroom, king size bed, glass door shower and toilet, double sink, coffeemaker, small fridge with soda, water, and beer, sofa, table with two chairs, coffee table, LCD TV with premium channels including hard and soft core adult entertainment, safe, two large closets, large deck with table and chairs, etc. We were on the second floor, so the view was just of the jungle ... We were in building One, which was convenient to the main restaurants and bars, but quite a hike to the beach. The buildings closer to the beach are a hike to the main lobby - go figure!
*No, the restaurants do not take reservations, but if you show up before 6:30, you can get right in. If you hit peak times, they give you a "beeper" and you can wander around to the bars, etc. until they call you. We thought the meal service was very good, when we bought a bottle of wine, the service was terrific!
*Yes, the coolers full of beer, water, and ice at the beach and near the pool were great!
*Yes, the social staff was fantastic, always trying to make the best of the bad weather.
*Yes, it is a bummer when you can't take advantage of any of the off site activities due to the weather. The transportation to Playa del Carmen arranged by Apple was perfect. Shopping there was typical, and there were some fun bars and restaurants.
*Yes, the shows were better than average. We especially liked the circus, and though the acrobat/gymnasts were fantastic. We really liked that you could wander in and out of the show without bothering the other guests.
*We never tried room service, but others in our group loved it.
*Our housekeepers were very efficient, sneaking into the room when we were not around, and we did get towel animals and hand written notes.
*The internet connection in our particular room did not work, but it is dial up speed anyhow. If you go sit in the lobby, there is high speed wi-fi.
*Yes, the spa was completely booked up, but heck, it was raining. I bet in sunny weather it is easy to get a spot.
All in all, we loved it!
