“Great find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012

We had a great stay at this place, it's a beautiful building well set up, with free wifi, good kitchen and the staff were extra nice. Popayan itself is a cool little town and I'd recommend the hot baths/bike day organized through the hostel.

Very clean, spacious rooms, good wifi, book exchange, well-equipped kitchen, very helpful staff. Well priced at COP45k for a private double.

Courtyard bit outside rooms for people to chill out in could do with some hammocks/comfy chairs maybe but i think the idea is people don't get too comfortable and talk late into the night outside people's rooms (much appreciated!) - there is a tv room with sofas if you do want to stay up late.

Not sure would bother with the 'downhill bike trip' they advertise - the hot springs aren't all that; the bike ride is ok (nb not 100% downhill, prob 60% down and the even the flat feels like 'up' as the bikes are shocking!). We thought it was quite expensive at COP40k for what it was.

Would recommend the curry night in the hosteltrail hostal they advertise though - great value COP10k for curry & a beer, and it was delicious!

We really enjoyed our stay at Hostel Caracol. The hostel provides good facilites (kitchen, internet, book exchange), is nicely decorated and clean. The location in the old town is great. The owners Kim and Toni are very friendly and helpful. They have been in Popayan for several years and know the city of Popayan and it's surroundings very well.

Laid-back and friendly hostel in redone colonial building, in historic center of Popayan. A nice resting place for couples and longer-staying travelers, on the way south to Ecuador or north to Cali/Bogota. Doesn't have a party-hostel feel. Quite clean and well-kept, with usual amenities. I recommend trip to the sulfur baths outside town and, frankly, just relaxing. Owners are a Scots couple who have been in Popayan several years and can advise on day trips.

Room Tip: There's a small dorm but the other rooms are all with double beds.

Among the best hostels we've stayed at during our time in South and Central America. Clean, simple facilities including separate TV room, kitchen, plentiful washrooms and pleasant communal space. Tony and Kim are very helpful, knowledgeable and well organised hosts. Not a party place but well located for bars and clubs. Delightful!
