“Good Stay Overall”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013 via mobile

Although it did not feel like a 5 star hotel, the Monasterio had impressive architecture, a spacious courtyard and nice grounds. Its location, on the edge of the historical old town, was a real plus. The pros and cons for us were:
Pros:
- wonderful old architecture
- location
- clean, tidy room with a large balcony off our room; excellent shower
- very good sauna (also had a turkish bath that looked good too)
Cons:
- room itself was small and cramped (we arrived tired, late in the day and did not ask to see other rooms)
- pool needed cleaning and chlorinating so could not be used
- some room touches missing, e.g. small fridge, free bottle of water (but there was a safe)

Breakfast was fresh fruit, juice, rolls, coffee and choice of how you wanted your eggs, i.e. somewhat limited but still good. Where breakfast was served was very relaxing and looked out over the garden.

Overall we had a good stay here but felt that, at the price charged, and given some of our comments above, that the hotel deserved a "very good" rather than an "excellent" rating.

One final point is that a hotel like this should have at least one person on the desk who is fluent in English.

It's a lovely old monastery with guest rooms surrounding a courtyard within the beautful old town. Rooms are fairly large and some have a private terrace on the upper floor. Rooms are basic but excellent quality compared to the rest of the town's accommodations. Hot water was limited when we stayed but I'm not sure if that's always true. It's a perfectly adequate hotel for the money but don't believe their 4 and 5 star claims.

While the premises are nice the rooms themselves are pathetic for a 5 star hotel, and since I don’t sleep in the garden or the patio, which are nice but not 5 stars, I can only give it a poor rating for their poor bedrooms and terrible service.
Location is good close to the square
Reception, one person spoke English and was nice but was training, the other one was short bordering on rude, strange as Colombians tend to be very polite. It took a long time to check in, for the first time the hotel wanted to find in our passports the entry stamp. They also make you sign for the pathetic basket of munchies in your room. Beware of the extra charge for room insurance, you don't have to pay for it. We have our own travel insurance.
Breakfast for a 5 star property was extremely poor. Fruit, juice and eggs! Even though it was pretty cold, the breakfast was served outside.
Rooms had commercial cheap carpet. The beds were very uncomfortable. The linens were cheap, the pillows as well, both very uncomfortable. While there are some thick curtains in the bedroom, the bathroom has none and the door does not close so it lets the light in. There is no heater and they give you a small cheap noisy heater that barely heats the room, so it is in constant motion. As we didn’t have a good night sleep, we came back for a nap, but they regaled us with the noise of a weed whacker for about an hour! The rooms also have a very pungent smell of humidity
Lighting is very poor but by moving the lamps close to the bed you can read.
Refrigerator none!
Wi-Fi not in the rooms.
TV- small modern with a couple of English channels
Room for bags- you can manage by using the wood desk stool
Tea Kettle or coffee maker. none
The bathroom looks like an old hospital bathroom. There is no place to put your things but a very high window sill. I have been in hostels with better bathrooms.
Shower was old and leaking everywhere.
Towels were clean and thin
There were no 5 stars amenities. Shampoo and soap!
Hair dryer had good power
Parking, yes
Laundry with very high prices
Iron and ironing board. None
No value for money, even if this was the best hotel in town it does not make it a 5 star.
Beware of hanging around the pool, even with bug repellent we still got severely bitten.
The people leaving such great reviews, have they ever been to a 5 star hotel? Makes you wonder if they are fake....
Driver they recommended promised a brand new 4X4 and arrived in a beaten up truck!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012 via mobile

Stayed at this hotel for 4 nights recently. It purports to be 5 star, but it is not in my view. It is a very nice hotel, using the old monastery attached to the San Francisco Church. It is well located at one end of the old part of Popayan, and 5 mins from the airport and bus terminal. It is an easy walk up into the centre of town, but Popayan is quite small. Rooms are decorated in a style similar to colonial ranches. They are tasteful and very clean. Everything works well, but there is no wifi in the rooms ( fine in the foyer though). There is no AC as it is not needed in the climate there. English is sparsely spoken by all the staff, so brush up on the espanol. One morning we went down for breakfast and it was not set up, but that was quickly rectified. Service is attentive, but not proactive in terms of travel advice, indeed there is no tourist information at the hotel. It is a very quiet hotel, too quiet frankly. We felt like we were in an actual monastery! They lock the front grill door on the hotel at all times and we had to ask to get let out and in. It is sad they feel they have to do this for security reasons, but c'est la vie I suppose. Make sure you bargain an upgrade and this hotel is a good deal, if not then it is probably not great value for money. There are other more atmospheric hotels in Popayan, but Dann is a solid citizen and well worth consideration.

From the first steps down after main entrance you are sink in the old fashion colonial atmosphere but and the same time you feel a spirit of monks who spent a lot of years to build so quite squared galleris 2 level monastery.
The suits are equipped by old fashion furniture and other old style things including thick candles and marvelous canvas. You will be surprised that modern TV-LCD panel and refregeraitor incorporated in this style too. When you open french balcony you can see mostly white painted one flow buildings or beautiful garden with pool. Each suite has not large but comfortable bathroom.
If you weak up with first rays of the sun you can catch a harmony of the natural and not heavy but elegant breakfast on the terrase with pool and garden view. And don't be afraid the breakfast from 6.30 till 10 am. we spend a few days in the monastery during BN fest when citizens and visitors put a several colors paint to each other on a face on a hair on everything. Is a furious but fun.And we tryed to escape to be painted so we got one shote by white powder. So you can understand why we spent daylight time in the galleries of internal yard reading and drinking free of charge coffee and in the hotel restaurant where we wore served with delicious meals and wine.
The room service is although quick and good.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second floor with garden view is better

Stayed in this wonderful colonial city in this very nicely restored Dann monastery hotel.
Rooms were very well done and hotel/grounds were beautiful.Plasma TV/wifi was good..Breakfast was a bit sparse the restaurant staff was quite sparse on portions because it was one of thos small free breakfasts but you were expected to pay more if you wanted special orders so that irked me a bit but I eventually did get some nice cooked to order eggs.Staff was friendly overall and at $129/nt got substantial discounts off their rack rate.Certainly the best of a not too great selection in Popayan.
