Mid Ocean is a very special place and private for its members to enjoy with family and friends. I must disagree 100% with the 2 reviews posted here. To the one who complained you must realize that Mid Ocean is not a resort, but a private club. It appears that unfortunately you do not know a member but rather relied on a hotel concierge or some other informal introduction to the club to play. If you did know a member he/she could have informed you of the summer (down time) maintenance schedule and then you would have known to wait and play during the season months when the course is to really be played.
Now, for the real Mid Ocean let me start by saying that this is a wonderful club with old world charm. A good portion of the staff has been there for decades and provides that old Bermuda feel. The fish chowder is a must (like the turtle soup at Pine Vlley is a must). The grill room is a great place after a round with amazing views. In addition, the beach pavilion in the summer months is fantastic and a nice addition to the club.
For the course-the second shot on hole number 1 is one of the most amazing second shots in golf as you hit into an elevated green that appears to be floating in the sky. The green on number 1 is in the top ten of the world in terms of views and the way it sits above the Atlantic. The tee box on number 4 is one of the best positioned tee boxes (second to the 18th tee box) you'll probably ever stand on ( the 18th from the tips on Old Head Golf Links in Kinsale, Ireland is still my number 1). The number 5 signature hole where George Herman Ruth lost 11 golf balls is an amazing view with a tricky right to left green. Number 9 can be a bear of a hole with a long drive to carry the water with a second shot to a blind green. Number 12 has a great blind tee shot with a very difficult second shot. When the wind is blowing hard good luck getting home in 2. Number 15 is a classic par 5 over the road in to the punch bowl green. Number 16 second shot is very tough into the wind. Number 17 is a classic redan hole-one of the best in golf. Finally you find yourself on the 18 tee box and while looking down all you can say is wow! The par 4 is a fun walk home past the club house to a well sized green. Your round is complete. Remember to read the greens with the grain because the ball will run very different depending on the shine.
Return to the club house for a fantastic dark and stormy and enjoy the views knowing you just played one of the best golf layouts in all of golf.
This club is the perfection of what a world class "country" club should be - enjoy your visit.
