“Winter "camping" in the yurts!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2012

This January we took our yearly winter trip to Algonquin Park, staying at the Mew Lake campground. The yurts are heated warm structures where one can sleep and eat. You must do your cooking outdoors though!
The comfort station is open for hot showers and washrooms. The out houses are open for the adventurous.
Check in is a breeze at the East or West Gate of the park. There you get your key, and you're in.
There is a host that lives in the park during the winter who can help you out with inquiries.
This year the skating rink was open for additional activities.
Our favorite pas times there are the marvelous track set cross country skiing at Leaf Lake and Fen Lake trails, as well as the wonderful snow shoeing. There is numerous marked trails to snow shoe from along the highway, or you can trek out back of the campground to the Track and Tower hiking trail.
There is lots to do, enjoy the great outdoors of Algonquin Park year round!

We camped at Mew Lake for two nights while doing a road trip in June and would consider planning a future trip just to go back . We were in the dog-free radio-free section and had a beautiful view of the lake and as much privacy as one could expect for this type of campground. We had neighbors on one side and they were friendly and quiet and we barely even noticed they were there. We had a blast riding our bikes on the nearby Old Railway Trail but you don't need a bike to enjoy it as it makes for a great hike as well. We had been on the road about 10 days when we stayed here and found the laundry facilities at the campground to be a real pleasant bonus as it saved us from having to stop and find a laundromat on the trip.

I stayed at Mew lake for 2 nights and 3 days in a Yurt, It was a great place to relax. Lots of hiking trails nearby, Biking trail right there, and a place to swim.
The yurts held up to 6 peaple and were reasonably priced. The mattresses were not the most comfortable, but we got by for 2 nights. Nice to have the BBQ set up for us and a large lot as well. I will definitely return here.

This was my third time going to Algonquin Park for the fall colours, but the first time I stayed in the park. The campground was very clean and well-maintained. I stayed in a Yurt.
There are trails right from the campground and I saw a deer and several smaller creatures (squirrls, chipmunks, ducks, blue jays, black-capped chicadees...etc.)
I would go back.

Glorious, majestic evergreens, loons on the lake, starlit nights, friendly fellow campers and, of course, chatty little red squirrels all combined to make this a trip to remember.

A magnificent lake and a well-maintained campground with great facilities - a laundromat, spotless washrooms and nice, hot showers.

Wish I could stay on Mew Lake forever!!!!

This was my first trip to Algonquin Park. My husband has been trying for years to get me to go there. The park is so very clean and well manicured. The Park Warden makes many trips around to make sure everything is going well. The Park Hosts are helpful and friendly. I can't wait to come back next year. That trip will be for 2 weeks as it is such a wonderful place to camp.

Mew Lake is a lovely campsite. You can book it online via the Ontario Parks website, where you can also choose your pitch. All of the pitches are massive (well, they seemed that way to us, anyway), and even though the website listed the privacy of ours (131) as 'low' I thought it was nicely secluded and didn't feel at all overlooked. This campsite is smaller than the nearby Lake of Two Rivers site and it also has a radio-free and dog-free area. We camped in this part - on reflection, it might've been nice to have some music but then we didn't actually have a radio with us - and it was really quiet at night. You get ample space to pitch a tent, park a car and build a fire; we also had a picnic table. They have long drop-type toilets dotted around the campsite and a 'comfort area' with proper flushing loos and showers near to the entrance (about a five minute walk from where we camped). I couldn't figure out where to wash up dishes, though. There's a beach too and Mew Lake is about a 15-minute walk from the Lake of Two Rivers shop, which is OK for basic things but does not sell alcohol or much in the way of meat - so if you are planning a barbecue it's probably better to bring food and drink with you or instead drive to the Freshmart at Witney, which is only 20 minutes or so and has a much better range (and a beer shop nearby!).

Algonquin is a gorgeous place - I wish we could have stayed for longer. One day we hired bikes and did the Old Railway Trail, which is 10km each way. This is a great site if you want to camp but you're not quite brave enough or don't have enough time to go into the more isolated park interior.
