“Canoeing in Algonquin Park”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2011

We have been to Algonquin car camping many times and decide to try back country canoeing this year. We arrived at 12 pm at the Rock Lake Access Point (#9) and were met by the Portage Store with our Kevlar Canoe rental. We put in around 1 pm and we canoed through Rock Lake to the portage (375 m) and arrived at a campsite halfway down Pen Lake around 3 pm. The following day we canoed and swam in and around Pen Lake. We left Rock Lake the next day around 8 am and returned to the Access Point by 11:30 am. The campsites are great - fire pit, food prep area, we had a bench on our site. Overall a great trip and we will do another next year. We have been there so many times (and were tired) that we did not stop on Highway 60 to take advantage the great trails and other exhibits - but they are worth checking out..

“Wonderful scenery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2011

We spent a day in Algonquin whilst travelling from Ottawa to Gravenhurst. The scenery was wonderful, breathtaking in places. We had decided to take a number of short hikes whilst in the park and opted for Peck Lake, Whisky Rapids and the Hardwood Lookout hike - these hikes are relatively short (1.5 - 5 kms) but very pretty with wonderful views but take plenty of insect repellant as the mosquitoes are plentiful - even having used repellant my wife and I had dozens of bites. Details of the hikes can be obtained from the shop or check out online at Friends of Algonquin. Whilst in the park we saw a female moose with two calves at a riverside location - it was wonderful to be relatively close to the wildlife and see them in their natural environment.

“Wow!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2011

This is the most beautiflu place we have visited in a long time. You pay as you enter the park for a daily permit to stop. If you just drive through its free.
The visitors centre is great, with a small shop and a reasonably priced cafeteria but the main draw is the most fantastic scenery you can imagine.
We were there in June which unfortunately means bug spray every time you leave the car but it didn't in any way spoil our enjoyment of the place.
Views from the visitor centre are awesome and the short film they show very informative.
Really can't wait to go back

“Canadian wilderness a short distance from Toronto”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2011

Algonquin park is a must see for anyone who wants to escape the city and see the real wild Canada. The park was many trails of different levels of difficultly, including the bog walk which is great for young families with a stroller. There are many, many picknick sites, sandy beaches and campgrounds. For those a bit more adventurous I strongly strongly recommend portaging or interior camping. If you are a novice or coming from far away, the portage store has complete packages with absolutely everything you will need from canoes, good food, tents and pots and pans. They can even plan your route for you. I cannot recommend this trip enough!

“An Awakening of the Spirit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2011

We took our 2 year old on a weekend canoe/camping trip into Algonquin Park, using the Kawawaymog (Round) Lake Access Point. It was relatively inexpensive (even with having to rent canoes - which can be done onsite) and was a good place for first-timers to enter the Park due to the shallow entry water. After leisurely canoeing for 2 hours (during which time we had the good fortune of seeing beavers, as well as a mother moose and her calf up close and personal), and 2 short portages, my son turned 3 in the middle of Lake Manitou. The water was clean and refreshing to swim in, and the air out there was amazing! We found a huge campsite on an island. The campsites are well kept and are far enough apart that you have privacy and you can really enjoy being a part of nature.

No complaints, except that you have to be careful of sand flies - they bite!

Make sure you bring fresh drinking water, toiletries, cooking gear, camping gear and, of course, food!!!

We will return!!!
