“Comfy and relaxing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2014 via mobile

The bunkhouse is on the outskirts of the village. The kitchen dining and lounge are are upstairs with the bedrooms and 2 shower rooms downstairs. Beds are comfy and come with sheet sleeping bags and quilts. 5 of us in a 6 bed room which was quite warm this year. The windows need to be kept closed due to the midges outside.

It's about a 10 minute stroll down to the village centre and good food and pubs no matter where you choose.

Overall it's well equipped warm, comfy and relaxing. We've been going for a few years now and no doubt will be back next year.

Three of us stayed here for our friends' wedding, and it was absolutely perfect! Friendly staff and other residents, comfy beds, excellent services. We really weren't expecting it to have such a nice kitchen and lounge, 2 fridges, microwave, all crockery we needed, storage shelves, etc. Much nicer than staying in a hotel, and we met some lovely people!

A group of 20 of us took over the bunkhouse for 2 nights to mark a special occasion. It is great for such an occasion with just a few reservations. The hostel is clean, well equipped (there are now 2 good sized fridges) and situated on the edge of one of the prettiest villages in Scotland. Mick, the owner, and Christina, the friendly cleaner, couldn't have been more helpful both with advice and info and in practical terms. Mick provided an extra table so that we could all comfortably eat together and he took away our recycling for us. The fact that there are only 2 toilets and 2 showers is an issue though and for that reason 2 nights was probably enough. It's perfect though for a slightly smaller group. We have also stayed before as a family in a 4 bedded room and had a wonderful stay that time too.

Only 4 of us staying so I had a 2 bunk room to myself which was plenty of room! Greeted by the friendly cleaner who gave me lots of useful info on what to see and where to eat.
Clean and warm (radiator controllable) and good showers, kitchen and lounge with TV.
Located opp the station and only a 5 min walk down the hill to the village and 10 mins to the beautiful coral beach.
Good food and local ale at the Plockton Inn and music some nights (Tues/Thurs?).
All very free and easy - and good value.

Room Tip: just take your pick

Our group booked the whole hostel and it was comfortable with only 12 of us. We really enjoyed our stay. Plockton is lovely and there are plenty of mountains nearby to climb and it’s easy to pop over to Skye for a visit. The beds are really comfy, the showers are good and the kitchen is quite well appointed with 2 cookers and lots of pots, pans and crockery. However there doesn’t seem to be enough room if the hostel was full with 20 people staying, as there is only room for 10 people to sit, the fridge is tiny (bring a cool box), there are only 2 showers and 2 toilets and if the bedrooms were full it would be a real squash with not enough room for peoples bags and clothes.

Though Plockton is verra pretty, one can't help feeling that the local providers could smarten their act up a bit... and this applies to the hostel as well. This purpose built bunkhouse lacks charm and character. I understand that it is a bit off the track for good craic and that there is no provision for a traveller to just turn up and pop the jug on for a cuppa... there is no tea or coffee or milk... and the shop is a 20 minute walk away. No huge problem of course but the welcoming feel just ain't there! The township feels as though it rest on it's laurels a little, and consequently it has a feeling of so, we got here - now what? A small effort would be rewarded I am sure... music happens once or twice during the week days and maybe I just lucked out, but the calendar of events looked a bit slim...
So back to the bunkhouse... a good comfy bed and reasonable shower... I wouldn't want to be there if it was full... lots of beds and just 2 showers as I recall... a great spot to rest after walking in the bonnie hills... a bit uncared for... missing the love. It was a cold night when I stayed there on my own and the heating was not turned on... just a bit miserable. Left well alone by owners which is fine.

On the plus side, this hostel is in a nice location directly overlooking the station and railway line. It is clean and tidy with four nice 4 and 6 bedded bedrooms, sleeping a total of 20. The bedrooms have shelves and hooks - which is always useful! The lounge area is comfortable. The price per night is also reasonable. The early morning train is a good alarm clock. Showers work well, albeit there are only two of them.

On the negative side, a single half-height fridge with no shelves in the fridge door is taking the mickey for accommodation that is meant to sleep 20. The fridge was full after 3 people put food in it with 17 unable to refrigerate their food!!! The Plockton website advises of a drying room - there isn't one! On enquiring as to where it was, owner advised "use the bannister" - Health & Safety issue there? On enquiring about further fridge(s) was advised "to put food outside" - it was 10C outside! Owner didn't come across as being friendly/helpful. The dials on the hobs have no markings on them, so nearly impossible to tell what setting the hobs are at or even if they are on/off.

This bunkhouse has potential to be good with just a little money spent. Improving fridge situation and having even a drying shed would be a good start. If you don't have a drying room - don't advertise that you do!
