“Wonderful Stay at the English Inn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

We simply loved our stay at the English Inn. We came to take part in the a few of the Esquimalt Centennial events happening in the area as we group up in Esquimalt. It was so nice to be back and to re-visit the “ye-old” English Inn. We went on one of the Esquimalt walking tours which was just lovely and walked down to the sea wall which was only a few blocks away. Our room was nice, clean and spacious. Our room was a ground floor unit in one of the outer buildings; it was a bit far from the manor but the room itself was lovely. The only negative, if you can call it that, was that the Rosemeade Dinning Room was not open, this is a negative for us simply because we used to love the food that was served there. As a solution we simply walked into Esquimalt for food which was a nice walk as the streets are so pretty and it only took us about 15 minutes.

We stayed at the English Inn while in town visiting friends and are very surprised at some of the poor reviews. We had a wonderful stay and would definitely recommend it. We stayed on the 3rd floor of the main house and while I agree the stairs to the 3rd floor are quite narrow, once you get into the room it is really quite spacious. We stayed in an Estate Room, Room 12 I believe and it had a nice king size bed and separate rooms for the shower and toilet. We really liked this as both my fiance and I were able to get ready at the same time.

The gardens were beautiful and the free parking was a nice touch as it is a little ways out of town so you definitely need a car. The bar area was really nice with a large flat screen t.v. but I agree with the other comments that it was pretty quiet the entire time we were there. Even some music being played would have made it more inviting. Then again we went out for the nights and weren't spending most of our time at the hotel anyways.

All in all it was a great stay with a lot of really positive features and I would definitely reccomend it to others staying in the area.

Room Tip: The Estate Rooms are excellent!

Arrived at 4:40 pm only to be informed by the mouth -breather (MB) at reception that our room was not ready, and then mumbled that only one person was on staff for housekeeping, and we could expect a 45 minute wait. MB had given us the room key, and since we had a 5:30 engagement, we thought we would just use the room to change in. Much to our surprise, the room was not only not cleaned, it was still occupied!

We went down to reception and spoke with MB who assured us that the people had checked out. We in tun assured her that all their belongings were still in the room, but looking at her computer screen, MB insisted that was not possible. Then she mentioned that a bride had used the room to change in on the previous day. We put it to her that a bride probably didn't leave a man's bathing suit (still wet) on the edge of the bath tub, but.......she was adamant no one was still in the room.

MB then stated she would just pack up the stuff in the room, and once cleaned, we could simply move in. We suggested the people who were still checked in there might get a little pissy upon returning to find their belongings piled up in the lobby, but again, MB could not be deterred.

Finally, a young man we assume was on maintenance who was listening to our banter waded into the conversation, told MB to get us a drink from the bar, and then to call the manager while he checked out the room. By this time, a second female employee had shown up, and she too went to check the room

Being late for our engagement, my girlfriend and I changed in the cramped public washroom, and asked for directions to Bullen Park, (which as it turned out was only a five minute walk away). Both female employees looked blankly at each other, hoping the other one might know where the place was, but alas, they did not, however MB did offer to look it up on her handy-dandy computer.

We opted to use the I-phone we had to find our way. Later that evening, we returned to find they did spring for a bed and breakfast, with MB showing us how to get there on.......well you know where this is going.

A once prestigious Inn with so much rich history has now fallen into disrepair and is being terribly managed. Victoria like much of BC relies on the tourism to keep the Province afloat. Places like the English Inn are not helping the situation.

A friend recommended us here, plus lived in the area some 15 yrs ago, got much more than we expected. Just happened to be booked in when there was also a wedding party booked in, didnt have high hopes for our evening. Add to that it was a very hot summer day. Wow, room was quite large, and surprisingly quiet. the room was quite warm, but theyndo have a good fan and lots of windows to open. A bit more out of the way than we like in victoria, but doesnt take long to get into the downtown area.

We booked through Hotwire and at $100.00 each for two large rooms in the carriage house was fine, free continental breakfast and free parking was fine.

The carpet in one room is stained and would be so much better removed altogether. Hot water plentiful and good pressure, but towels rather worn, no soap suppliued in one room and just one set of shampoo and conditioner. The bathroom was clean but outdated. A few small bugs in one of the bathrooms.

Location is out of town, but not an issue with a car. The exterior and grounds are beautiful. Needs some investment inside though, but decent value for the price overall.

Room Tip: carriage house is just a little away from the main building and private.

We chose this hotel as bookings were tight all over Victoria, and it turned out perfectly fine. We were pleasantly surprised by the size of our 2 rooms (in northern part of hotel, 2nd floor): huge bed/sitting area, with alcove for fridge/coffee, decent bathroom with 2 sinks, and big deck with view of the grounds.
They have taken the old inn and upgraded the decor, furniture (some of it beat up and tired though), linens, curtains. So it creates a more attractive atmosphere. Bed was satisfactory.
Because it's an old building the floors squeak, particularly in corridors.
The main lobby areas and lounges are attractive, as is the breakfast/restaurant area. Computer for public use on stair landing. Even on a busy tourist weekend, the bar lounge and restaurant weren't open in the evening. Odd. So the place was dead after 9:00 pm (which is OK for sleeping).
Breakfast included was adequate, not outstanding: fresh croissants, fruit, OJ, coffee.
Grounds are pretty, with the other old English style buildings unused or starting to show lack of maintenance (Anne Hathaway's cottage thatch roof is covered with a tarp; sad).
Parking was initially a problem with 3 weddings having taken place that day, but it sorted out by late afternoon.
You would want to view the room being offered as there are some strange rooms no doubt, like the ones on 3rd floor which are reached by a narrow staircase.
It could be so much more, but they are trying. Worth a shot. $209/night plus GST.

Room Tip: Don't go higher than 2nd floor. We didn't check out the other houses/rooms on the estate: Ve...

We too used our travel zoo discount voucher to stay here. The small garden room on the third floor overlooking the front of the building was bright and cheery (lots of light). It was very quiet and private. The last flight of stairs to the top flr was tight carrying our baggage in tow,and the entrance to our room had a short step up and then a short step down upon entering, which could be ackward for elderly people. The washroom had a bi-fold closet door which was binding a little making it difficult to open and close. Lots of light in the main room, but not enough in the bathroom. The windows were also tight, which made it difficult to open.(no air conditioning) but they did supply a good fan. But Hey, this is a 100 yr old building. A little planing would solve these problems.
The room was clean and tidy and the beds and pillows were comfortable. Nice flat screen TV and free internet service. Good size bathtub and shower head. Breakfast was okay with fresh pastry, yogurt and fruit, but they didn't supply any juice, and muffins would be nice touch, we had to request for some iced water. Lovely old mansion and surounding buildings had character with comfortable seating and gas fireplaces in main, and the grounds where nice although somewhat neglected in areas. Helpful and friendly staff, if needed. I would consider staying here again in the future.

Room Tip: each room is a little different, so you might wish to look before booking.
