“Relaxing break, beautiful food.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2014

My husband and I have just returned from a weekend break here. The hotel is incredibly relaxing, in a beautiful setting and has no phone reception which is perfect! (You can obtain a free wifi passcode, but we chose not to).

The staff were all very friendly, especially the maitre D in the restaurant. We ate our evening meal in the main hotel restaurant and can highly recommend it - the atmosphere was relaxing, the service was great and, above all, the food was really impressive.

As some of the other reviews say, yes the hotel is old fashioned but that is part of its appeal and charm.

Our only criticisms were that we thought the breakfast was overpriced, though tasty, and the pool is pretty cold!

We were a little worried after reading some reviews but this hotel was lovely. The staff were friendly and couldn't help you enough especially John in the restaurant. The room and bathroom was very clean and spacious and the bed was extremely comfortable. We had an evening meal in the dining room on two nights and the food was first class. In all, a great little hotel. Don't go there expecting a 5 star hotel, it's not but If you want a small country hotel that is clean, friendly and warm then this is a good choice.

Was attending a wedding next door at the inn on the lake - only a 2minute walk which was a great surprise
Was a little worried having read some reviews saying it needed a little refurb- wouldn't have been more wrong!
Beautifully decorated dining room and bedroom, the staff were amazing !
Had a little mooch round the hotel and found it really interesting - the Campbell library was fascinating and would be perfect to relax in if we only had more time
Again, lovely pool if we had the time to use it
Excellent breakfast with even better service from the lovely gentleman
Our room was very spacious with a huge bathroom - would definitely recommend the extra few pounds to get a suite

Room Tip: Stayed in the Raven Suite - was excellent and great value

We had a fantastic stay here in September 2013 with our group of 20 walkers. The rooms were clean and comfortable. We had tea and coffee making facilities which was great for making a flask. I would say that you could hear the people in the room next door (as I recognised the laugh from our group!). The hotel is in a great location for walking in and around Ullswater. Unfortunately, the sauna wasn’t working when we were there which would have been nice after an eight hour hike!
The breakfast was made to order, delicious and hot. The evening meal we had on the second day was of the same standard. The restaurant manager went out of his way to make our stay special even though the restaurant was extremely busy.
The Ratchers Tavern in the hotel has a good atmosphere. The pizza was tasty and good value too!

From arriving to departure the staff were very friendly and helpful, with a good knowledge of the local area. Bedroom was spacious and very clean with excellent views. An ideal base to explore the Lake District or just to relax and unwind.

Spent 1 night here in July 2013. Nice looking hotel, friendly staff. We made use of the pool and spa pool whilst there. The spa pool was difficult to get started and we only managed to get it going once. no staff were on hand near the pool area to help.
We chose to have dinner at Ratchers bar. It was extremly busy and noisy that evening. Took a while to get our food, but was lovely when we did.
We were meant to get a upgraded room due to loyalty card, which the receptionist said she had done. When she gave us back our room key they were for the same room. However the room we had did have the best view which i added photo off below. Room was at back of hotel at the very top, was lovely and quiet and we had a great night sleep.
breakfast the next morning was nice, and view was great.
