“Water Good Time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013

...always start with a terrible pun.

The Ullswater Steamers are a group of boats that operate on the 8 mile lake in the North East of the Lake district at the top of the Eden valley near Penrith and Keswick.

Ullswater itself is the second longest lake in the Lakes and sits in some of the most dramatic scenery. There is Hellvelyn (England's second tallest mountain - a hill really), the saddle and the Mile which is an original Roman Road that traverses a hill.

The Steamers have operated on the lakes for over a hundred years, but are no longer coal powered being converted to diesel decades ago. The trip around the lake will take you approximately 2 hours, with the option of starting at either Pooley Bridge or Glenridding.

In regards to waiting for a boat, Pooley Bridge has smaller facilities but they do at least provide free WiFi, which can make the time pass easier.

The cost isn't cheap, though there are family ticket options, but the service is efficient, pleasant and it is a magical ride on a sunny day.

“Great way to cool off on a hot day”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2013

Arrived at Pooley Bridge, just missing the steamer, but then took a later round trip on the Ullswater steamer which provided fantastic scenery and was a great way to keep cool on a very hot day.

It was reassuring that passengers were counted onto the steamer, but no safety instructions were given to passengers until the return sail from Glenridding, and had expected a little more commentary on the scenery, but it was a great experience, and one not to be missed.

The crew were very helpful in assisting all passengers on board, especially those with a disability and the many dogs joining the cruise. Good also to have the opportunity to purchase a drink below deck.

Next time will hop on and off the steamer at its various stops and allow time to walk alongside Ullswater, and ensure that sufficient time to do this has been allowed by purchasing more time at the car park ticket machine - Quite expensive at £5.00 for four hours, but a visit not to be missed.,

“A little Trip on the Ullswater”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2013

Took a detour home from Ambleside and caught the steamer at Pooley Bridge, which is a delightful little village. Got on the steamer and had a fab trip up to Glenridding and back to Pooley Bridge. The scenery is fantastic, loved it.
