Olite is undoubtedly one of the most attractive Paradores in Spain, set next to the fairy-tale castle of the Kings of Navarra, and with a decor inside worthy of the setting. Right now, the problem is that the town has dug up the square in front of the parador, making access very difficult (it is said that all this will be put right by year-end 2006), and forcing guests to use the unguarded public parking some way away. Parking in Olite was never easy, as I recall from a visit in 2002, but now...!!!!
Still, the Parador inside is excellent. I had a superior room with a raised sitting area; bar service is fine (a pity that they have relocated the bar to a modern extension to the left of the original building; food was a bit above parador middling standards (I had a half-board package which turned out to be very good value for money, even though one is restricted to the set menu). Staff were exceptionally pleasant, at reception, bar, restaurant.
Could not get a clear answer about whether there will be private parking or anything when the road works are finished; nor could anyone tell me if the lovely trees in front of the Parador will be replaced.
Slight negative: this Parador is on a route organised by
a group trip of motorcyclists, who cycle a planned route each day, with heavy baggage etc taken in a van. This can mean that bar/restaurant are a bit noisy.
Olite has a few bars (one diagonally opposite the Parador), some restaurants that I did not sample but which seemed expensive from the menus displayed outside, a few bodegas in which to buy the excellent local wine, and, of course the castle.
Summary: very good, but not perfect!
