“Friendly but nothing special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013

Centrally located, this is a popular bar and restaurant with friendly staff. The 'gourmet' menu sounded more interesting than it turned out - good size portions and value, but nothing special

“updated review of El Castillo”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

In my previous review, I indicated problems with the credit card machine. To date, I have been trying to dispute THREE charges (2 on my husbands card and one on my card) because of a faulty credit card machine.
The merchant ran our card through the machine -- an error message. She ran it again -- error message. We gave her a different card -- error message. Thus, we paid cash. Low and behold, all three charges showed up on our credit card statements (two charges on one statement and one charge on our other statement). We signed for nothing. No receipt was printed. We paid in cash. .
I have tried disputing this with CapitalOne and since we have no receipts, they cannot (will not) reverse the charges. They did credit one double charge on the same card - so, in the end, we have paid three times for the same meal.
Be cautious paying by credit card here -- we have learned our lesson.

“Food was fine - service lacking”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2013

A rainy night and we didn't want to wander all over looking for a place to eat. This restaurant looked busy and lively - so we took a table for dinner.

Food was fine - not the most memorable meal we ate, but certainly not the worst. The set menu for dinner was 18E and the food and wine was plentiful.

Yes, the waitress that everyone talks about is still working. We were scolded once or twice (with some slight eye rolls?) for not completely understanding something. When we went to pay, the credit card machine did not work (wifi problems we were told??). Our bill wasn't huge and we did have cash to cover it - so no problem, but just kind of an awkward few moments (we were told there was a cash machine down the street if we needed it).

Would not recommend (as there are lots of other choices) or go back to.

“Lovely Meal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

This restaurant had been recommend by where we staying in Santillana del Mar by our B&B. Though he had not been himself, his clients had given good reviews. We found it excellent food was good and atmosphere was excellent. A great place if you enjoy the local cider.

“Good place but ruined by that rude waitress...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

If we are talking about the same person, yes, she is still there! (check the other reviews in English and Spanish). This place was recommended by 2 different locals met so this place was supposed to be good..

We were accommodated by this waitress (she looked annoyed by having to shut down her phone conversation at 20:45!) after a few seconds we were served by a male waiter, much nicer but lasted shortly... then she came back to us again... with her so unwelcome attitude and body language... OK, maybe she's just in bad mood with her personal problems...

We decided to have the day menu at 17,00 euros (starter, main dish, dessert, wine, water, no tax included) well in a touristy town like Santillana something under 16,00 is difficult to find... we had the bean stew (cocido montanes), fish soup (was soothing especially with the low temperatures outside!), solomillo steak (Cantabrian meats are excellent with no sauce, is naturally tasty, remember when driving through the Cantabrian countryside by the seacliffs all those cattle living by the sea rather than living in closed farms...) for dessert I asked the mille-feuille (puff cake) which was sitting deliciously just baked aside to our table with a very inviting smell... the waitress said hastingly not possible because is was reserved for other people.. ok, lets see what happen with the other people who were sitting next to us and having the same menu as us (fish soup, steak)... they asked the puff cake and they were served with it... even though felt bullied by her attitude I encouraged myself and decided to ask about it (as a question with no vexing tone) and her answer with a defensive tone was “not your business”... excuse me, did I hear well??!? Of course, manager or owner of the place not available at the moment...

I was thinking if I, knowing pretty well the language I was treated like that, how bad treated can be with the foreign tourists who need more explanation about the dishes?? Pity (real pity) because the food is not bad, especially if recommended by locals... but with a service like that (think about it if want to go there, unless you have a friend or relative of that waitress!). Even if spending more, there are many but many many other restaurants in the area...
