“Tradition quality and service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013 via mobile

Situated in an unassuming side street it does, however, have an attractive courtyard and our rear room has a magnificent mountain view over tiled rooftops. Rooms and bathrooms are spacious and spotlessly clean and linen etc of quality. The hotel is quiet and the dining room seldom seems to get busy as others have noted. The food though is excellent, including breakfasts - no buffets here. Staff are accommodating and helpful - even offering an alternative to the menu one evening when we said we weren't very hungry - we had a light soup and fish instead. Some guests, I see, mention the hovering waiter but to me that is attentive service. The location is a short walk from the main square. We greatly enjoyed staying at this hotel which has character. Do not be put by the two-star rating.

Firstly, having read the other reviews I think that Ostrich60 is being a little unfair, and perhaps a little bitter at having been made to carry her own bags up two flights of stairs (oh la la) and not getting her way with a last minute change of plans. Having resided here for six nights I can safely say that the hotel is exquisite in every way. As a traditional Mallorcan townhouse it is unparalleled in its aesthetics, with the rooms bearing an elegant and calm simplicity and the dining room and vestibule boasting some interesting works of local art. The food is simply marvelous, with traditional local cuisine, and the staff friendly and courteous. I can see after six evening meals here why it has a Michelin star! The half-board pricing was, again, uncontestable in terms of value for money. I don't think I have eaten so well and yet so inexpensively in all my travels. As for the location, what can I say? It is absolutely perfect being on the doorstep of train and tram and also for many walking routes in and around the golden bowl of Soller (I picked up a fantastic guide 'Walking Paradise Soller' in the local newsagents which details 40 routes branching out from here). After a week here, I am at a loss at how anyone could compare this to Fawlty Towers or have anything remotely negative to say about El Guia. To be sure, the proprietress, Catia, does not mince her words or take any nonsense, but why should she? This is part and parcel of Ca's Pentinados charm. In the inimitable words of a great Austrian-American philosopher, 'I'll be back...' ;)

Think Basil Fawlty must have trained here. The building is traditional and dining room has some interesting paintings by famous local artist. It's in a pleasant setting with views over the mountains from the upper rooms and is right next to the station - handy for the charming 2-guage wooden train from Palma and for the onward tram to the seaside resort of Porto Soller. Be sure to visit the station's delightful little museum with Picasso ceramics and Miro paintings. A little gem. Soller is lovely with lots of restaurants, although all the ones we tried were fairly unremarkable with offerings of the usual tourist fare of gazpacho, paella and Sangria - there's definitely a place for a good local restaurant. It's a perfect base for walking and exploring the mountains.
However we were disappointed with the hotel itself. The room was quiet and clean. But the pictures are misleading. The lovely courtyard where we had envisioned ourselves sitting outside is just for looking at. There is no outside sitting space - we were told because most people who visit the hotel just want to walk. We had to carry our own bags to top of hotel as there is no lift. The breakfast was uninspired - limp cheese or ham and tired croissants and jam. Worst of all the hotelier was peremptory and uncompromising. When we wanted to change our plans she was stern and admonishing and insisted on us either staying an extra night or having to pay the full cost of the room.

Lovely, traditional building, tastefully and simply decorated, lovely dining room, clean, good value, very nice food (breakfast every day, and we had one evening meal). No TV in the room, which I liked!

Edificio muy atractivo, decoracion simple y de buen gusto, comedor encantador, limpio, de buen precio, comida muy buena. No hay television en la habitacion, lo que a mi me gusta.

Room Tip: Our rear room had a view up to the mountain

Small, friendly base from which we set out every day to explore the north part of the island. Simple, unfussy but comfortable, and large airy rooms. It feels as though you are staying in someone's house. Great central location in Soller on a quiet street, nearby square with excellent restaurants. And fantastic value.

On our first trip to Mallorca we selected Hotel El Guia because the hotel was recommended in Politiken's book: "The trip to Mallorca," and we were not disappointed. The hotel is located in a quiet side street near the railway station. We were warmly received by the hostess and the waiter, who immediately carried our suitcases up to the room, which as promised, had a view of the mountains. We had booked a double room with bath and half board for 110 €.

The furnitures were a bit like returning to old days; the hotel breathed of old-world peace, there was for example no TV! Everything was absolutely clean and the beds were really good.

The breakfast was put on each table, and there were plenty: Freshly squeezed orange juice, coffee, ham and cheese, crispy baguettes and Majorcan pastries. We got tin foil to pack it in, we could not eat. In the evening we had three dishes well cooked and tasty food.

After a fall, I was taken to the hospital and operated. The hostess was very helpful to my wife and asked participating to my condition. At billing paid my wife for only one person during the time she was alone in the room and only for the number of meals that she got.

We will definitely choose the same hotel again!

Hotel Guia is a simple tradional Spanish hotel. It it perfectly positioned for the train, tram and taxis but in a very quiet situation. Parking is difficult as anywhere in this town but the staff will help you to find a place. Cati jumped into the car and took us to a free car park. It is possible to unload luggage before parking.
The rooms are a good size and kept immaculately clean. The hotel has an excellent restaurant and we greatly enjoyed the half board option which is very reasonably priced. Local food, beatifully cooked in a local style and with generous portions.
