The hotel is built in 3 sections and so the rooms vary greatly depending on which section you are staying in. A great many of the superior rooms are in the new section which was recently refurbished (2008). The suites and standard doubles appear to be in the older sections of the hotel. Noise carries through the corridors and into the rooms. It was impossible to keep the shower water from draining onto the bathroom floor because of a design fault and both hubby and I slipped while accessing the shower - so beware. The beds were comfortable enough - the usual foam mattress and foam pillows. The air con worked, there was plenty of hot water and the maid changed the beds at least every other day. The outdoor pool and the grounds surrounding it are fab - especially for the fair skinned as there is plenty of shade. The poolside snack bar opened on june 1 and the restaurant staff were very good about opening the outside dining terrace whenever the weather permitted. The breakfast buffet was more suited to the Continentals as the emphasis was on cold meats, cheeses and sausages although there was eggs, bacon and fresh fruit. The food on the evening buffet was plentiful and changed nightly - some nights it was even of a very good standard!
The hotel attracts the 50+ age group, walkers and those with small babies and so it is not the ideal destination for those wanting a night life. Although there are some very nice restaurants in the port, there is not much going on at night. The Es Port offered one night of live entertainment while we were there. There are plenty of lounge areas within the hotel - all very characterful - even a card/games room with a piano - as well as internet access - I think 1 Euro for 15 mins. The lounges are well furnished with upholstered chairs and sofa's.
The trains are amusing but a little overrated - it now costs Euro 17 return to Palma. You can take a wonderful bus journey thru the mountains to Lluc and on to Porto Pollenca for Euro 14 return - the journey takes 2+ hours each way. Alternatively a bus to Palma from the same stop outside the church will cost E2.85 and take 40 mins - go via Palmanyola for speed or through Valdemossa ( 1 1/2 hours ) for the scenery.
Great walks from this hotel - they sell all the walk books in Reception. Reception staff very pleasant and helpful and a great improvement since our last visit and the tunnel is complete so no more blasting. It is now a much more peaceful stroll along the wide harbourfront with traffic permitted only one way. This is a particularly good hotel if you are a walker - the downside being the bus frequency is poor and taxi's are expensive.
