The hotel is built in 3 sections and so the rooms vary greatly depending on which section you are staying in. A great many of the superior rooms are in the new section which was recently refurbished (2008). The suites and standard doubles appear to be in the older sections of the hotel. Noise carries through the corridors and into the rooms. It was impossible to keep the shower water from draining onto the bathroom floor because of a design fault and both hubby and I slipped while accessing the shower - so beware. The beds were comfortable enough - the usual foam mattress and foam pillows. The air con worked, there was plenty of hot water and the maid changed the beds at least every other day. The outdoor pool and the grounds surrounding it are fab - especially for the fair skinned as there is plenty of shade. The poolside snack bar opened on june 1 and the restaurant staff were very good about opening the outside dining terrace whenever the weather permitted. The breakfast buffet was more suited to the Continentals as the emphasis was on cold meats, cheeses and sausages although there was eggs, bacon and fresh fruit. The food on the evening buffet was plentiful and changed nightly - some nights it was even of a very good standard!

The hotel attracts the 50+ age group, walkers and those with small babies and so it is not the ideal destination for those wanting a night life. Although there are some very nice restaurants in the port, there is not much going on at night. The Es Port offered one night of live entertainment while we were there. There are plenty of lounge areas within the hotel - all very characterful - even a card/games room with a piano - as well as internet access - I think 1 Euro for 15 mins. The lounges are well furnished with upholstered chairs and sofa's.

The trains are amusing but a little overrated - it now costs Euro 17 return to Palma. You can take a wonderful bus journey thru the mountains to Lluc and on to Porto Pollenca for Euro 14 return - the journey takes 2+ hours each way. Alternatively a bus to Palma from the same stop outside the church will cost E2.85 and take 40 mins - go via Palmanyola for speed or through Valdemossa ( 1 1/2 hours ) for the scenery.

Great walks from this hotel - they sell all the walk books in Reception. Reception staff very pleasant and helpful and a great improvement since our last visit and the tunnel is complete so no more blasting. It is now a much more peaceful stroll along the wide harbourfront with traffic permitted only one way. This is a particularly good hotel if you are a walker - the downside being the bus frequency is poor and taxi's are expensive.

This was our second stay at the Es Port, the first time being 5 years ago. Since then a sympathetic extension of bedrooms has been added, but apart from that the hotel has remained the same. It has large mature grounds with avocado, pomegranate and olive trees, 3 tennis courts and an outdoor swimming pool as well as a large lawn and terrace. All this outdoor space is flanked by hills and terraced farmland on one side, with views of the sea from bedroom balconies.

Inside there's a decent pool and a modest spa area, some pleasant lounges and a huge dining room. The bedrooms are modern, spacious and comfortable with good bathrooms. Dining is a rather old-fashioned but enjoyable experience, and a bargain to boot. Breakfasts offer the usual cereals, fruit, bread, cheese and ham arrangements, but with good assortments of hot food each day. Dinner is a huge buffet of salads, fish, meat dishes, vegetables and various puddings, fruit and cheese.

The hotel attracts outdoor types, and there are often large walking groups staying who like to settle in front of the log fire in the bar after dinner, so don't expect a look-in there unless you are very quick! The food suits the outdoor life and the setting is ideal for independent or group walking. It's not chic, like the Esplendido, but it's comfortable, well-located and good value.

A great hotel, especially the indoor pool option as the weather was pretty wet in march. The staff are quite good, some better than others. The food was a bit basic although there are lots of options to eat locally elesewhere.
The hotel has lots of character, and although not all the rooms are old style like the website would have you belive, they are comfortable, and have good views of the gardens and surrounding areas.
Although there other hotels around which are smarter for sheer character, go for the es port. The bar, and open log fire create a cozy atmosphere and the people watching opportunities are also worth the money alone.

“Disappointed....”

Es Port Hotel

Whoever designed the hotel's website did a good job in my view because it seduced me into booking 3 nights at the end of a week long stay in the resort. As you would expect, it accentuates the positives - but hides some weaknesses. Yes, the old building which houses the reception, bar, other public spaces and some guest accomodation is very historic and atmospheric - but tagged on to it is a 20th century addition which houses most of the accomodation. We stayed in a standard double room which, although basic, was clean - albeit the towels were a bit threadbare. On the subject of towels you will need to take your own for the pool as none are supplied. The pool itself is large and well maintained - but has the feel of a municipal lido. Breakfast was pretty standard stuff - cereals, ham, cheese, eggs, bacon, breads, juice etc but again fairly basic quality by which I mean the range was limited and own brand types (non branded sugar puffs, low grade mueseli etc) and tinned fruit alongside melon. One night there was 'entertainment' at the outside stage area - local singers and an electric organ to which one couple bravely got up and danced. The indoor pool was small & narrow, heavily chlorinated and the so called fitness suite consisted of a cramped dark room (more of an enclosure) with one of two pieces of machinery which were not worth using. The tennis courts - although usuable - had seen better days. I would say the average age of holiday makers was somewhere in the 60s. There seemed to be quite a few tour operators there - so maybe it is not a destination for independent travellers. You also need to be careful reading the rates - everywhere else I have stayed recently quotes a per room rate whereas the Es Port's rates are per person. At 100 euros per night for two people I found it expensive for what it was compared to local competition such as the Esplendido and Aimia. If you are looking for somewhere to eat in the area I would recommend the restuarants at these two hotels (the Aimia is partiuclarly good value and the service was excellent and it is just round the corner), there is also the Randemar and a tapas bar called El Pirat (I think). So, in summary, not a disaster - but I would not go back, there are definately better places to stay in Puerto de Soller. WIth a bit of design and attention to detail Es Port could be good - but it isn't.

We have just returned from 10 wonderful days at this lovely hotel. Having been recommended it by friends, and having read all the reviews, we did have high hopes....we were not disappointed! The hotel itself, the resort and the surrounding area all exceeded our expectations. Highlights were travelling on the tram from the port to the delightful town of Soller. The train from Soller to Palma, which travels through the mountains, and the beautiful nearby village of Fornalutx (which incendently has a wonderful cake shop).

The hotel itself had everything we needed...good food and service, an excellent swimming pool with plenty of sunbeds, and most importantly the peace and quite we hoped for.

Well done Es Port...we hope to return again soon!
