“True Parador castle”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013

A great place to spend a relaxing afternoon and evening during touring in Spain. The area does not have a lot going for it but the hotel makes up for that. A jug of sangria in the castle courtyard can get the imagination running followed by a superb set menu dinner which was good monetary value sets off the day before retiring to a well presented bedroom with all the necessary requirements. Bed was a little hard but for one night, very acceptable. Internet links were good and sharp response times.
A very pleasant hotel recommended if passing through the area and away from the motor ways.

I don't give out many overall 5s, but this place gets one! Everything about it was utterly fantastic from start to finish. The hotel is a true castle; the facilities are gracious and verge on opulence. The food and wine were superb, both in the tapas bar and the very gracious and formal restaurant. Even the internet access was perfect - free and hotel wide. I can't think of a better setting or a cooler hotel I have stayed in around the world. It's off the beaten path and worth the trip.

I like the historic Paradores. This one has it all.The rooms are built with stairs to the windows looking down from the castle.Wonderful breakfast eggs cooked to order.Worth the splurge if you want to get the ambiance.

Some people dream of castles in Spain. This one is a dream come true. The bedrooms - and we had one of the cheapest - are luxurious and larger than the average Parador room, the restaurant is quite beautiful and the bar is a lovely place to sit and relax (if only they would take the television away. No-one watches it and it is an anachronistic blot on a beautiful room - and the reason why the hotel only gets four stars and not five). Everywhere there are fascinating wall-tiles of the history of the castle and a particularly striking St. George and the Dragon. The gym is a pleasure to work out in and the sauna, if expensive, is clean and relaxing. The staff were charming, helpful and friendly. The only other problem is that there is absolutely nothing to do in the town of Alcaniz - just sit or lie back and enjoy this outstanding Parador!

Room Tip: Even the cheapest are excellent!

As it is a converted castle it was no surprise to find an enormous high-ceilinged bedroom approached via a spiral staircase and along a long corridor; what was a surprise was that it was war and cosy with subdued lighting that sprung to life as one approached.
The baronial dining hall (too grand to be called a room) with its unusual chairs suggested correctly that the meals (we eat there on two nights) would be good.
The reception staff were friendly and efficiently got the message to us (while we were eating) that they had located the source of the noise that we had mentioned to them earlier (it was a window in an unused room that was banging in the gale).
Breakfast (in a separate chamber!) consisted of an extremely wide range and could not be faulted.
There is a nice walk around the outside of the Parador walls. The views are of course outstanding.

As Paradors go this was very good with warm welcome, comfortable room and enjoyed the Gastronmic dinner menu in a fabulous dining room. Waitresses were attentive and friendly. Enjoyed some super local wines and one of our better meals during our holiday. The Parador also has a museum castle within the grounds and the guided tour in spanish was very interesting.

This was a hard Parador to get in to. I had to push it to a Wednesday night, 'off season', even to get IN. The concierge, while efficient, weren't 'friendly' upon arrival, more so on departure. This was the first Parador where i accepted the pricing for JUST a room, no breakfast, which was okay. The problem(s) with this Parador are several: the location is truly in the middle of nowhere though the drive in is spectacular, near many national parks that reminded us alternately of the Sierras, Arizona, the Grand Canyon (we were coming up the local roads from Alarcon and this can take several hours. DON'T miss the Bodegas, as we did, just off the interstate between Valencia and Madrid; blink and they're gone!). The decor is almost all in a 'mint green', VERY chilly feeling, in late fall. The carpets are worn and the rooms as basic as any of the Paradors we've stayed at. The room(s)? look over agricultural fields, nothing 'spectacular' although perhaps some overlook the lovely cathedral square below? Our room was very NOISY, the entire wing one could hear folks come and go from after (their) dinner and earl(ier than WE wanted to be up) in the morning. For the price paid, this was exceedingly unwelcome. The room seemed drafty, though the bedding was ample to cut the chill. The room i liked best was the cafeteria/bar with its banners and beautifully colorful walls. We did not take breakfast here, as mentioned, nor dinner, chosing to have a large lunch at Hotel Guadalupe about 3 blocks down from the Parador ... an excellent alternative (and they serve until 4 p.m.; good thing, we closed them down but the waiter was hospitable despite our late arrival). Of all the Pardors we've stayed at, this is in the lowest 'percentile'. It is an old monestary and has a grand location but lacked warmth and was a disappointing 'low note' to our travels.

Room Tip: We were in room 107; any on this wing would have been equally noisy, i fear, with modest 'views...
