“A great stop in an idyllic location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2012

Having just crossed the border from Italy, this was our first experience of Slovenia and the welcome was warm and efficient. Although we chose this guest house for the restaurant (reviewed separately) the room was clean and comfortable and worked very well for us.

This boutique guest house is located in a beautiful old farmhouse set back from the road about 5 minutes drive from Kobarid. We found the booking process cumbersome, however. At the time we could only find Hisa Franko on i-escape.com and with no availability calendar it took several emails and days of waiting to finally book available dates which suited our itinerary. On the plus side, we had originally booked the simple room, but were given an upgrade to a large room with a balcony on the first floor in the main house. The room was modern (very IKEA), clean and nicely decorated but not as boutique as we'd expected after reading reviews and seeing photos online. At the height of summer, the room was also quite hot and stuffy even with a fan. But the bed was big and comfy with good linen. In our room there was also a big wardrobe, small fridge and TV. The breakfast was fantastic: lots of fresh bread, local jams, cereal, cake, fruit, cold meats, cheese, olives, teas & tea leaves plus coffee. We were also offered fresh eggs any style which were beautifully presented. Two of the members of staff were very helpful and offered a number of local sightseeing options and good maps/brochures. Many people stay at Hisa Franko just to eat at the restaurant and it doesn't disappoint if you like gourmet food. Be sure to try the tasting menu for €55 pp -it's a culinary experience! One thing to note is that the restaurant closes on Mondays, which we weren't aware of when we booked. Fortunately, we stayed 2 nights so we had a chance to sample the restaurant's delights. All in all, it was a pleasant stay.

This is a family run boutique hotel run to a high standard in keeping with the gourmet restaurant which is the hotel's other big attraction. Located in a small village about 2 kilometers west of Kobarid towards the Italian border it makes a good base to tour this beautiful area. Naturally, its rural location makes it only suitable for those with their own transport. The rooms are clean modern and individually designed with lots of wood, glass and space, and have all necessary creature comforts. The small details show a similar aesthetic to the presentation of the food, thoughtful and stylish. The breakfast is as good as you would expect if you have had your dinner in the hotel restaurant. a buffet of fresh natural products and anything hot you want freshly made to order. Highly recommended.

This is a gem of a boutique hotel. It is located about 3 K outside of Kobarid in the picturesque Slovenian countryside and it hosts one of the top restaurants in Slovenia,if not in all of Europe. The owners, Valter and Ana are down to earth, accommodating and very gracious people. Their attitude is obviously infectious, as their staff are impeccable. The rooms are clean, spacious, elegant and each is individually and uniquely designed and decorated. (We had the two upper story rooms that shared a huge covered lanai-like veranda with our traveling companions, which was a splendid place to unwind at the end of the day.)

The rustic setting is like winding back the clock to a bygone era. You can watch local farmers still cutting and baling hay in much the way they have done for decades. Cows graze in the wildflower filled meadows just outside your doors and the birdsong in the morning and evening is incredible. A very pleasant respite for us after spending the previous days in Lake Como and Heidelberg.

There is plenty to do in the Kobarid area, especially if you are outdoors-oriented. Paragliding, hiking, biking and whitewater rafting. We chose to do the raft trip, and due to recent heavy rains, the Soja River was running well above its normal stage, which made for a very good run. (It may be a bit less exciting later in the summer, but still worth doing just for the beautiful scenery the river runs through.

Also worth visiting is the small war museum in town itself. It tells the little-known story of one of fiercest and most brutal battles of WWI that took place for over three years on the steep mountain ridge above town.

Finally, the hike up to the waterfalls that cascade into a cave just outside of town are worth the small effort. Very beautiful.

As good as the hotel is, the restaurant is what most people come here for, and that is reviewed separately.

Room Tip: Choose the room(s) with the large covered veranda.

We stayed here as part of a small group. I really appreciate the story of the hotel, and how hard the owners work to make this a pleasant stay. The reason I would think of another place is for two reasons: First, you are out of the city about 2.0 kilometers, but there is no good walking path along the very busy road, so you need transport. Second, and specific to our reason to be in Kobarid, is that it is not that functional for an active trip (with us it was hiking). By this I mean a good place to dry clothes and hang hiking clothes. It does take fashion over function. If you had a car, or were just sightseeing, it would be a nice place to stay. Again, the owners are so nice and dedicated, I don't really want to discourage you, but I personally would have rather it be in town (even though it is not the most hopping town), and more functional for why we were there. I would say eat at the excellent restaurant either way, but that is a different review.

The accommodations here are very good. I was a bit worried about staying in rooms attached to a restaurant, but my anxieties were completely unfounded. The rooms are spacious and clean, and the breakfast is excellent.

The only downside is that the location is probably just beyond walking distance from Kobarid itself, so if you want to visit the town you need to have a car, or to borrow one of Hisa Franko's bikes.

We spent three nights at Franko. It is a charming guesthouse up a long driveway from the road. The rooms are nicely furnished, ours opened onto a terrace that was edged by the restaurant's herb garden. The lounge area is bright, the patio a wonderful peaceful place to rest after a days hike. The "outside" dining room has glass walls that can be opened and a tent like ceiling. The inside dining room is elegant. Ask Valter to show you the wine and cheese cellars. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of Slovenian and European wines.

Room Tip: No one in our group had a bad room
