“4 days at the Castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

A family of 7 (ranging in age from 18 to 83), we recently spent 4 days at the Castle while exploring our family's Tipperary roots. Everything was perfect: the rooms, the food and the hosts. Pierce was our official weatherman, and under his guidance, we successfully adapted our schedule to the weather to minimize any inconvenience from rain. He and Joan were also advisers on Irish and local history, restaurants, running trails and basically any information we needed. It was a great time and we would love to go back!

Spent four cold February nights in the warm and elegant Castle County House. The room was impeccible, the breakfast - bountiful. Loads of antiques. Unending assistance from Pierce and Joan, your hosts. I was here on an Aer Lingus package which provides vouchers for 3 star b&bs throughout Ireland, indicating that if a facility was above 3 stars, an additional fee could be negotiated. This was a 5 star facility. As a single, 4E/night additional was requested and gladly paid (although Joan took 10E total when I left). Thurles (which I found charming) is a 10 minute drive away. Happened to be here for the first significant snowfall in 30 years. Got some nice pix.

We stayed here for a few days after Christmas and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our stay. The Hosts were wonderful: friendly, welcoming and thoughtful. Our room (2) was massive but very comfortable and the breakfasts a joy - the highest quality of everything, made us realise what we miss about Ireland. If you are planning a trip to Tipp, long or short, this is the place for you. Fantastic; the other reviews are not wrong...

Having frequent business in the Thurles area, I stayed at The Castle on and off for the last eleven years - until I retired. I liked everything about the Castle and the Duggan family, all of whom were unfailingly helpful, accommodating and friendly throughout that period. Let's face it: eleven years is a good robust test.
In particular I liked the spaciousness of the rooms and the hospitality, and I still miss the breakfasts.
As other reviewers have mentioned, Pierce is a mine of information on the area and its history and always willing to share his knowledge. He's also a huge support to Joan. My family having been in the B&B business for a few years, my experience is that it's almost always the woman of the house who's the real engine of the business, and that's certainly the case at the Castle. Congratulations Joan.

We had the absolute pleasure of staying with Pierce and Joan Duggan at The Castle in September. It was so much more than we expected. We had booked a "Trace Your Roots" package which included 3 nights B & B, fabulous breakfasts, an amazing 5 star dinner cooked by Joan, and heaps of genealogical advice from Pierce for searching for my long lost Tipperary ancestors. It was the first B & B we have ever stayed in and the Duggans certainly set the bar very high. On arrival, we were shown to a family room when we had booked a double room as Pierce thought we might like to spread out a bit since we were there for 3 nights. We were spoilt with a huge room, a view of their very own Tower House and luxurious furnishings. You certainly feel as if you are in a castle. To top it off, the hospitality is 10 star! Pierce and Joan are so friendly and so interesting to talk to. We felt very spoilt staying in The Castle and have left with special memories we will never forget.

Not being able to find a hotel in Thurles, I started checking B&Bs and found the Castle Country House. And what a find! A beautiful old house attached to the keep of an ancient castle - rooms were beautifully furnished and very comfortable, landlord and lady very welcoming and an amazing breakfast! As a guest I felt that my needs were important and the Duggans were very an joys to ensure they were met. The final gesture was when I needed to travel into Thurles and instead of having to call a taxi my hosts offered to drive me in. Next time I will not be looking for a hotel in Thurles - I will get online to the Castle and reserve my room, with that lovely hospitality and the great breakfast. Enjoy!

Incredible place! Our room was unbelievable with beds dressed for royalty and vaulted ceilings. The view out the window was lovely and there was even a small table and chair to have tea or write out some postcards. Pearce is a lovely man that makes a scrumptious breakfast that includes his wife's homemade brown bread! He is a joy, always singing or humming and that just adds to the whole experience.
