“Suberb”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2013

Recently renovated the Archaeological museum offers a vast variety of items that will show you the history of the greater area of this part of Peloponese. The great experience starts when entering this great building that hosts one of the best exhibitions in Greece. The size of the museum is what it takes to make a tourist happy. Not as big as top make him bored not as small as to leave gaps in his knowledge. The pieces are exhibited in a way that every visitor will understand their value and the atmosphere of each period. Worth see it. The experience is concluded with an espresso in the Constitution Square.

“The Met and the Louvre exhausted me; this exhilarated me”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2013

This beautifully curated museum was like a Goldilocks experience for me--not too big, not too small, just the right size. The exhibits were carefully placed in context and an era came alive.

The importance of the Dendra Armour was a revelation. It greatly enhanced my trip to Mycenae and I wish that I could have returned to the museum after my trip there to review the artifacts in a different light.

This little gem of a museum is a rich insight into the roots of modern Western culture and its link to the East. This is not to denigrate the wonderful National Archeological Museum in Athens, but this museum is so focused on the local region that it was easier to digest and to explore the referenced sites from here.

Just to top it off, the on-site staff were delightful people.

Also, be sure to view the movies. They make the more recent discoveries so real.

“Revamp Museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

It certainly was worth waiting for the revamp. Loved the way the pieces have been shown, plenty of room to move around and look at the displays. Information on the pieces were well presented in Greek and English. The building itself is Venetian and is a delight to look at but what is inside is the very best of Mycenaean day to day living. There is information about nearby Asini (new dig being carried out now), Epidavros and Tiryns so if you visit the Museum first you get a gist of the history of the area before you go off on your travels. The displays are well presented not too much over-crowding.

“Great preview of nearby sites”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

Mycenaean suit of armor was stunning as were the votives from Tiryns, Epidauros, Mycenae, etc. Well worth the time to see before and/or after the nearby ruins.

“Midnight in the Museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

In mid-May the Museum had a free day, and night. We were in the square late, and saw the Museum open, so we went in. Lots of town residents were visiting too. The Museum is housed in a centuries-old Venetian administration building. Its strongest displays are Mycenaean in date. A jazz group was playing inside, and kids were playing outside. What an enchanted evening!
