We picked the Alianthos Garden Hotel for its good reviews on Trip Advisor, and Plakias for its location on the south coast of Crete. Normally, there are quite a few boats from this location to nearby beaches and islands to the south of Crete. The hotel is only a short distance from the beach and the port, which was not a problem for us (salt water swimmers). There is also a nice pool with sun beds and shade. The Alianthos Garden Hotel turned up to be an excellent value relative to the price for room and half board. The food was good and included typical Greek dinner items (the cook was proud of his creations). Breakfast has numerous choices, although the orange juice was rather watery. Used dishes were cleaned up quickly by friendly personnel. Overall, the hotel is very clean: we noted extensive mopping during the morning and cleaning of the pool.
On concern may be the size of the rooms and the space for the shower. In our case, the shower was exceedingly small (you had to drape a plastic curtain just around you), and you had to hang your clothes using an innovative pull-down pull-up system with a storage high up. It worked, but it showed that every attempt was made to create space. We requested to see other rooms, and indeed other rooms had much more space, but we had a much nicer view towards the see and could enjoy our balcony. Towards the beach there is the Alianthos Beach Hotel, which appears to be a nice hotel, but this blocks the view from many rooms in the Alianthos Garden Hotel. We therefore decided to stay in our smaller room with the nice balcony and view.
We stayed 2 weeks in Crete and this hotel was towards the latter portion of our stay. As guide books suggest: it can blow very hard in Crete, and we did experience this during our stay, to the point that all on the beach activities cease to exist; none of the boats were running. We used our time in Plakias to make excursions to gorges, Phaestos and other touristic attractions. We also visited Matala, which is also an interesting place to see. We believe that more going on there, however, it seems that the better hotels are in Plakias.
Overall, we do recommend this hotel for its excellent price/performance.
A room with a view towards the beach will likely be smaller and have a very small shower. A bigger r...
